@[menno:22593] I suppose Amerika should have stayed at home and let Germany burn Europe to the ground, reduce England to rubble and slaughter millions more? Leave the band out of history and enjoy the songs. If Germany needs help again, she'll get it from the U.S. Clearly the opposite isn't true but then I suppose they have their own issues don't they? |

| @[pyfka:22591] The videos are not diagrams of the songs and often had nothing to do with the subject matter (Du Hast, Keine Lust, Sonne, etc.). Using them to figure out what the song is about is a dead end. If the lyrics don't speak for themselves Till has given many interviews. | |

@[sunshine_arakhan:22589] Spot on. I've seen that as well. And while the videos often correlate to the songs themselves, they just as often do not. While one of their best videos ever it's not one that hews close to the lyrics. If that were not said I would point out that "Sun" and "sonne" end with the same sound as heroin. Depending on your accent. New Order wrote a song called "True Faith" where "Morning Sun" replaces "Heroin" for radio. It works either was as for an addict, taking that hit brings on the warmth of happiness one associates with the Sun. Although in a much darker way. |

Between the lyrics, the music video and the band interviews during the promotional tour for "Mutter", I am pretty sure the band stated the song was in response to the accusations from the far-right that somehow aiding the Columbine Murders simply because those murders listened to Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. And probably New Kids on the Block when they were in the 5th grade. While not referencing the incident specifically, the press made a fortune in their over-satured coverage of that tragedy; especially fake news stories tying music to the atrocity. If anything, these murderers were rewarded with fame as are so many other killers and assailants (Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, etc). At the end of the film the band appears to win a TV award for their performance of the very real very deadly bank heist. Not all videos directly correlate to the subject matter of the song of course. However, I think "Ich Will" is Till's thoughts on how the media glorified that violence and in a way rewarded not just the culprits but also Rammstein and Manson whose names got more news, more mystique, more people exposed to the music who might like it. That national exposure was helpful to the band. The fact it was a bogus correlation made the band and Manson as well look like victims of slander by the press... slander that didn't really stick and only enhanced their visibility. Slander specifically from nutty far-right Christians looking for anything to blame but themselves or gun laws. So sadly, even though the band had nothing to do with that event, at the time, they were blamed by a few crazy people and this is while "Mutter" was being written so I imagine it was on his mind. Finally, lyrically, I think the song has the balls to sing from the perspective of the killers before they did what they did. We know that psychologically they were troubled and alone and while no excuse, feeling invisible and being bullied clearly cock'd the gun they loaded. I think the video is pretty brilliant given the level of terrorism coverage now. I can see there being an award for best crime. OJ Simpson cleaned up at the Emmys last year. (Well, not personally, but still). |
