America – Tin Man Lyrics 8 years ago
I know Dewey has explained the lyrics and he makes it sound reasonable. But sorry, anyone who has ever taken LSD would agree, the words still kind of resonate to the way things look and feel on an acid trip.

@[leonardo217:19118] Thanks. That makes perfect sense. (But anyone who has ever taken LSD would agree, it still kind of sounds like the way things look and feel on an acid trip.)

America – Ventura Highway Lyrics 8 years ago
As stated above by Leonardo 217, in an interview Bunnell explained that alligator lizards in the air were shapes made by passing clouds on a sunny day when he was a kid. I do give high marks though for the other imaginative Californians who claim that alligator lizards smell up the air in spring with musk, or fall from cliffs along the ocean on to car windshields (what have YOU been smoking?) I live a mile from the Ventura Freeway and I've seen my share of alligator lizards, but never falling through the air. But as for being "struck by purple rain", I always assumed that meant he'd taken some LSD and was literally "tripping" while watching the night sky and waiting for a metaphorical "early train". That's the kind of thing that can run through your mind while on acid. It also explains why he may have been having a conversation with himself. One part of him wanting to run away from whatever his his current situation was..."Aw, come on Joe, you can always change your name." With the other more rational part of his mind saying that's not really what he wants to do, "Thanks a lot son, just the same." Back in those days various batches of LSD were often given distinct names like "Orange Double Domes", or "Owsleys", or whatever. I never heard of "Purple Rain" myself, but it sure sounds like a nickname for acid to me, and that's what I've always thought when I hear that lyric.
