| Thinking more about the sudden shift to third person in "he fell apart with his broken heart"... 'He' could be referring to Peeta, when he hit the force field and his heart stopped. It became obvious then that Katniss really cared for Peeta (Finnick himself said so), and maybe that's when blood drained from Gale's skin/face, became pale from the shock of this revelation. | |

The last stanza reminds me of the part when Gale got whipped and was rushed to Katniss' mum. He was at his most vulnerable (physically and emotionally) while he lay bloody and half-conscious on the kitchen table. He and Katniss also had a very tender moment then. Blood draining from one's skin can also be a play on blood draining from one's face, to be shocked or mortified by some horrible news, like Katniss' engagement, perhaps. |
