Gladys Knight and the Pips – Save the Overtime (For Me) Lyrics 11 months ago
The producers of this song perpetrated a lyrical fraud! I think the original lyrics are “Donna,” not “Darling,” and is sung from a man’s point of view regarding his “pretty baby” working overtime on her job instead of loving him at home.

They wanted the song to be gender neutral but they thought, as I do, that Donna sounds better than darling on the recording (who’d really notice?), so they sang “Donna” while making “darling” the official lyric. Of course they overlooked that the ensuing lyrical description, “pretty baby,” makes it gender specific for a woman named Donna.

Just my two cents. 😉

Amy Winehouse – Tears Dry On Their Own Lyrics 2 years ago
@[jolietjakemcfly:46416] Yes indeed! I usually frown on songs built on top of other hit songs UNLESS the new creation equals or surpasses the original source. Kudos to the great songwriting team, performing artists, and life partners: (the late) Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson; The Supremes; and Amy Winehouse for recreating a version of that masterpiece that is itself a masterpiece that ???? Stands on its own. ????

I agree with Argos as told by the singer/writer McDonald. But the flaw in the tale to me is that if she felt so little about him and the moments they shared, I don’t think she would have met up with him again. This would have ended with a phone call or with no further interaction at all.

Boz Scaggs – Lowdown Lyrics 4 years ago
I think the man is a hard working middle class guy whose significant other is bragging about what she’s got, and things she probably doesn’t have. She’s also pressuring him to spend beyond his means so that she can keep up with “Joneses” and stay popular with the “in” crowd. His buddy is alerting him as to what she’s doing and that he needs to put his lady in check.

Silverchair – Tomorrow Lyrics 4 years ago
I just discovered this song while watching a rerun of an SNL episode in which Silverchair was a musical guest. I don’t know why the song didn’t grab my attention at the time, but I’m adding it to my collection now.\n\nThe lead singer was barefoot so I thought maybe he came from modest means himself and was comfortable doing that and singing about poverty. Or maybe that was just a grunge thing.

Gregory Porter – Be Good (Lion's Song) Lyrics 8 years ago
I agree with what's been offered so far. I'd like to add my interpretation from the point of view of the caged lion whom she plays with, flirts with, teases, and ultimately breaks his heart. The lion nicknames her "Be Good" because that's what she says to him when she takes the relationship to the point where he wants to get physically intimate with her. "Don't be fresh." "Let's take things slow."

But she's been hurt before by other lions (or unfaithful liars) and that's why lions need to be kept in check for she fears that if she allows intimacy, she will be hurt again by the uncared beast.

So when she pulls his tail (gets him passionately worked up) but won't left him out of that "friendship" cage its hurtful to him. Lions are handsome and fun to be with until sex is introduced into the equation.

In the same way Sophia purrs at her estranged husband Harpo to "be nice" in the juke joint in "The Color Purple," Be Good tells the lion to not be bad and try to rush her into something she's not ready for - and may never be ready for with this particular lion.
