Vic Chesnutt – Sponge Lyrics 6 months ago
Its still amazing how many ppl totally dont recognize Vic music in 2025..... even in the USA. Anyway. I think this song is a big metaphor to talk about how our lives are ephimerous from the beggining till the end. Because it talks about how the world basically sucks off all our lives at eventually will do or has done with our ancesters. We basically die and the earth claims our organic tissues and sh*t... is an amazing and at the same time scary brilliant song.

Vic Chesnutt – Soft Picasso Lyrics 9 months ago
Dude, it's amazing how Vic Chesnutt is an enormously talented artist and not even the Yanks recognize him that much.... even in this day and age, 2025 and this song doesn't have even an interpretation or even an attempt of giving it a meaning. Anyway, here's my view on the song.
To me, this song talks about how "open" relationships are just scams people state to themselves just to deny and evade they are in a pretty fucked up emotional situation.
So here both protagonists of the song are despicable persons. As they openly accept their promiscuity, but openly deny that they do any wrong when they do. This reflects in the girl character, as she believes that promiscuity and casual sex is a total revolution, that empowers her, even though she may hurt others' feelings, even from her main "modern man", who, by the way also is a slag, pretending to himself and others he is a total "heartbreaker" when latter the story unveils, he is someone pretty void inside and he actually holds a huge pain to see how his main "modern girl" just ain't faithful to him anymore and she just ride every cock she fancy, and even told this stupid guy that is funny on his silly face.
Anyway, beyond this, the song closes magnificently when the guy actually is the only one to recognize he lived a scam and died for it, as he never actually liked the course of the events in his fucked up relationship.
Now, my feelings on this whole subject are that for some reason, I think girls are actually more indolent than guys in toxic relationships like the one depicted in the song. Maybe because they are familiar and culturally grown as subjects of desire, so eventually they gain attention and care for men, while men are familiar and culturally grown to hide their real feelings and hold the tears and emotional pain, so they can't speak clearly when, for example, a relationship breaks away, they just hold the freakin pain and pretend they are strong when they are not, when they are diyng inside. Both, if you ask me, are terrible kinds of people who just hurt others and show no mercy, and a huge selfishness just to not be honest to each other.
Personally, something similar happened to me, similar to what the song expresses, first I already knew this girl cheated on me, and I also knew I was a slag to her, but when she finally dumped me I was shattered... So yeah, if that experience was useful, it was to reaffirm my utter contempt, for these polyamorous relationships or those phony gross promiscuity values defended as "modern" but only practiced by shit people that actually hate themselves and are total void and damaged souls inside.

Jake Bellows – Help Lyrics 1 year ago
I trully DK why Jake Bellows is a great talent, he is on Connor Oberst's level... and his lyrics are deep and introspective as the same Elliott Simth's ones. I heared he don't give a dime for fame and well that must be so true even few people know of him even in the USA. Anyway this is a beautiful song for pleaing help, although not literaly speaking all the feelings into the song point to a helpless situation like "...being screaming but alone..." YK.

@[holesinthinair:50856] Ive always think ppl who only can relate Elliott's lyrics with dope stuff are kind of solw-brained...

Like if drugaddict songs were the top meaning of Elliott's lyrics when they're not specific about that stuff.

He once stated he wrote about complex emotions, bieng "dependence" only one of them, dependence also said it wasn't only about drugs. Human beings can be harmful dependent on many stuff not only drugs.

Heatmiser – See You Later Lyrics 1 year ago
IDK if this is related to his breaking up with his ex-GF JJ. Gonson, which, as far as I know, was reluctant to let Elliott go...

Possibly it refers to when Gonson was still hurt by Elliott's rejection so she tried to send the message that she was better off with another relationship.

Anyway, this is a great song to talk about those kinds of difficult ruptures where you give up and one of the people in the relationship is that kind of self-attention ho*s that wants to spit on your face how much they are better off without the other... but then the cold answer and the most logical one is "who TF cares".

@[CONTROLDbyhatred:49932] I also agree with that interpretation. As Elliot used to run away from ppl or couples that started to get to much engaged with him. The last being Jeniffer Chiba. Quite manipulative and even said he wanted to marry her so probably the last easy way out was svcide for him sadly.

Men at Work – Children On Parade Lyrics 2 years ago
I think this song talks about the child sx traffic in the world. Because, Why would they be on parade?? A parade is a showcase of objects you get amused with.

I think the metaphor is quite neat... then the closure of the song is sad and shocking as well, they've gone away. That means they passed out or just left abandoned and broken because that horrid abuse nobody, not even the news talk about.

Elliott Smith – Satellite Lyrics 2 years ago
I agree with those interpretations which state that this song is about a quite cold crude critic to that feeling, most times stupid and cheesy of being too in love...

The whole picture of the song is so clear and beautiful in its narrative tough... people pointing with their fingers to the moon at midnight possibly saying words like "oh look how beautiful the moon is tonight, just like you darling..." you know the typical hollywood love scene line a teenager would say. And anyway the moon is a big question mark, that is something quite impersonal objet just graviting the universe, and which millions of pepole imply tons of stupid methapores at it. The Elliott reflection is like Ok that big satellite is just there possibly when millions of couples just collide with each other, the narrator on that line places the moon as the main caharacter in the narrative so it sees this people imperssonaly, just colliding like idiots falling in love for each other...

The "names you drop..." line is also another nausea critc to the names people in love or poets put to the moon when they're in love, a big silver "x" a huge sun in the night, whatever... even Elliott called it a "Big Bulb Breaking", the ice on his veins is precisely him feeling totally disconected of that stupid love-falling feeling.

The "call it lovers moon strange" line, also agree is the center of the narrative, as depicts a total disconection with the moon as a love methaphoric subject. Then, "because it acts like the lovers do" agree with the comment that says that the moon only show us his lighted surface and not the darkened one, like mst people even those too deep in love won't dare to show their darkest parts to their lovers....

Then the closing line "a burned out world staying up all night" is totally brutal. Because is another quite precise depiction of the moon, which is literaly "burning" without atmosphere in the bright side at hundreds of Degrees so yeah it's actually like a hell and not the stupid paradise love poets imply on their metaphores. Is staying up all night burning as a hell and people just idealizing it from their egocentric stands, just like the lovers would do at each other.

@[the:48450] green eyes I know for many ppl drug is a topic commonly taken as literarly in most Elliot's songs. And don't get me wrong, probably they actually are.

The problem with almost always relate Elliot's lyrics to drugs is that it becomes quite a sordid, dull and plain common place. I mean you did this comment almost 20 years ago on 2004, so I don't expect your answer anyway...

But I think USA always have been fked up with the drug consume issue and is quite terrible that horrible problem just have become a "normal" thing to quote, when it is not. Feel sorry for ppl in dependency situation hope they get out from that hell. Elliott apparently couldn't and that always has seemed so sad about his story.

I think you can also relate this song not to drugs but to insomnia for example or any other sleep disorder or even anxiety disorder YK. Not everything has to be related to the fkn drugs.

I think it is actually about America. A critic to american so called "exceptionalism"...

Also to believe this country and most of its people feels like the center of the universe when they're just not.

Look at the rest of the comments in here for example, people get very ofended to even think this song may be refering to a critic of that ugly America issues. Against the world and its horrid militarism. The "disabled" line fits perfectly into that american antiimperialist critic of this song.

Bright Eyes – An Attempt to Tip the Scales Lyrics 2 years ago
Ok, first I state I am going to write only my opinion. So if You don't like it, take it as 100% subjective bullshit and it'll be OK.

About the song lyrics strictly not the interview I guess Connor is probably singing about a pretty lousy Eating disorder. Because it seems the protagonist of the song is making reference to an attempt to tip the scale, to make it down to an optimum result he or she got obsessed with and almost make it on the verge of death.

That character then realizes he is about to die so he starts to get clean again and tries to solve those quite f cked up habits that take him to that point.

The song also makes references to "something you lost" that's probably the main motif for the eating disorder that is killing the character.

I guess Connor experienced some kind of thing like that in his own story but is so difficult for him to deal with it directly that he writes some cryptic songs about it.

Now about that damn interview...

At first, I thought it was actually a real part taken from a radio interview.

Then I realized he actually make that up for the song, in order to actually show up how his mind is in an actual disorder. Whenever you have a mess in your mind that's how it feels sometimes you know, like both parts of you talking in circles -like the "Haligh" song reference- and contradicting yourself at some points, like those parts on it when he says he sings to attract attention and sympathy but then he says he hates to be looked, or that part where he says he is depressed but then denies he is talking about that at all. Or that weird psychopathic part where he says he used to inflict self-damage to his arm as a kid just to enjoy the attention that was caused when he started crying...

Now, and this is properly my opinion, I hate this interview because it is full of Connor's self pretentious bull sh t. Now let me be more explicit about this criticism.

Conor was born in 1980 if I don't get wrong. So when Fevers and Mirrors Album was launched in 2000. He was only 20 years old. I don't want to demerit his absolutely great artistic talent as a musician and also as a songwriter, only because of his then young age when he launched that album, but many lyrics and especially this one full of edgy teenager bull cr p...

First of all that crap, he mentions being depressed and neurotic as if those features were an essential part of his musical personality and talent. I know he is probably mocking it so it is not 100 % serious, but come on! When you are 20 YO you actually feel as if you were a wise old man, when actually you are just a spoiled middle-class bugger still.

So yeah, my opinion is that to be pretentious about having a depression or neurotic episode as if it were a "cool" thing it is just not! it is pathetic and sad. Also, only edgy teen brats are actually feeling that way and think that's an authentic part of their personality when it is not.

Depression and neurosis are serious mental disorders that require professional and scientific treatments to improve people's lives, not only "exotic" topics edgy teens appropriate to themselves to look deeper and wiser, or talented.

Talent does not come from any of those emotional illnesses and taking them as the cause of anyone's talent is just a big stupid lie. In this case, Connor is enormously talented because as he said and quote: "...Um, actually I had a great childhood My parents are wonderful, I went to Catholic school They have, they had money, so It was all easy I basically had everything I wanted handed to me." So as you see Connor is talented because he had enough financial middle-class stability, and plenty of cultural and musical resources and influences at hand to be a greatly musically stimulated child, who learned the guitar and developed that fantastic artistic gift. So yeah what I'm basically trying to say is that Connor had an enormous talent because of his economic privileges and the well-being life he lived as a kid, and not because of that stupid depression-neurosis he seems to be almost "proud of".

Now another big contradiction he didn't realize he did on that weird interview part of the song, is that prior precisely. I mean, whenever the interviewer mentions him, so for the lyrics on your songs I can see them reflect you had a hard life, a dark life... so he immediately evades that obvious logical inference, and mentioned he had a fantastic childhood, which then is in part true -because of his privileged talent derived from a solvent middle-class Nebraska family-, but it is, and this is the most important part, also a big lie. Because his lyrics actually depict some terrible episodes, maybe some of the abuse -not sexual necessarily-, he may have had as a child. Like Elliot Smith's parallelism, the difference between him and Connor is that Elliot actually recognizes his troublesome childhood because of many f cked episodes and the constant abuses of his Step Father. And Connor just evades the obvious troublesome past, and the worse is that he feels enough loyalty to his family to sustain that lie. OK, one thing, and I know, is to have plenty of economic resources to have a "good" life, but not that "good" whenever in your family are emotional abuses and aggressions mixed with parental tenderness and "love", and any psychological basic knowledge suggest that mixture of family aggression and "love" acts are the source of many anxiety disorders. That Connor always had. Also, about this point that freaked-up part when he recalls his mother was a baby murderer that killed 5 babies (I know it is some sort of dark joke, and not necessarily true), along with that self-inflicted arm damage as a kid (that possibly it could be true), reflects his family was not a honeybunch home at all... Obviously, many dark episodes happened there, that just makes complete sense especially if we remember Connor's brother committed suicide a couple of years ago (2023 when I wrote this opinion), so well as far as I know, many suicidal people had to cope with a horrid past and many emotional family negligence.

So yeah I guess this Connor interview in this song was an attempt to make fun of his evident problems in a stupidly edgy way. Instead of recognizing them as his own inner demons he needs to solve them. And don't get me wrong is a perfectly acceptable way to deal with them, but the information he reveals through the lyrics of that interview is just very cynical and pretentious, in some points he recognizes he loves to receive self-compassion from others, he likes people to feel sorry about him, and that is not something nice, that's just pathetic. And not a legit form of artistic expression that's what I think about.

I even know the real Connor hate interviews which may be the reflection of this fake interview mocking set-up. And also had this introverted, bearish attitude with fans and social circles. So yeah I guess this song is a prove of that, a very weird way to deal with pain.

I know now the comparison between him and Elliot Smith is stupid. But at least Elliot was more honest than Connor when he wrote those murky but beautiful songs.

Total ND masterpiece...

To me talks about a, f cked couple that just is on the edge of the cliff, on the edge of disaster.

She basically doesn't care anymore for his couple and actively searches for a new lover.

So he perfectly knows it, although he needs to lie to himself in order to doesn't feel anxious about losing her.

He knows he is a total wank guy who basically lost her beloved gal against another stud. The gal doesn't feel sorry for his pathetic arse and at the same time is rude to him verbally so she is hurting him and he wants to kill himself but in the end, he realizes this pathetic situation and accepts it with a simple WTF!

This relates a lot to one shitty similar experience I had once.

Brilliant from the beginning till the end.

Well I guess the drugs reference is quite easy to catch on this one.

Nevertheless, as music interpretations can be totally subjective, I guess I interpret this one not necesairly into the drugaddiction line. But most into this void one person can have passing through a shitful teenager years or early young adultness on my case. To me this song makes me remember when I was 27 YO, man thats by far the most f kin terrible year Ive ever experienced. My ex couple just drop me after several years of relationship, I was a total s tupid asshead, still living with my old parents and I didnt have a job so yeah those f kin days just sucked. I avoid myself eating a lot, and when this girl left me felt just horrible. I actually feel that deprivation syndrome without her and I basically remember her every f king second so it was a total torture. I guess I evade myself on other pleasures just to "get high" precisely. So yeah I mean I was not necessairly an heroin addict but this song just made me remeber how a void just take you to another hook and thats so horrible. Gladly I overcome all of those past shitfull days and Im glad they never come back.

Elliott Smith – New Disaster Lyrics 3 years ago
@[yertrude:44115] Well. Sure there are plenty of evidence that Charlie Welch was a m f ker abuser, violently or even sexually.

Now, I don't know why many people bite the hook about "Elliott's Mother being also a victim of Charly, and ongoing a spoiled marriage" thats utterly false. 1) Bunny, Elliott's mother was not a victim, was a complice of Charlie abuses because she, being his own mother never dare to do anything to stop them or dennounce them to the authorities, up to the point Elliot just left Texas and move with his biological father to Oregon, he was escaping from Charlie and the dispicable-negligent attitude of his own mother. 2) Bunny Welch was actually happy with his husband Charlie, she never left him, even know that most likely abused phisical or sexual to his own 1st biological son that is Elliot; even after Elliott's death the 2 m f kers Elliot and Bunny were seen buiyng a fancy estate in some middle class part of the USA thar I don't particulary remember, so the unhappy marriage was also a lie. You can understand that if you read that in the raw but magnificent "Tormented Saint" bio now here in 2022.

My interpretation is probably that Elliott wrote this song to a gal that just was willing to get stick to him even knowing that Elliott was a disfunctional guy so deep in drugaddiction. It may sound simple but kind of fits with his context.

Elliott Smith – Riot Coming Lyrics 3 years ago
Overall I hate this stupid American culture on drugs, and how lots of people just always try to see drugs in every Elliott song there is.

So to me, in this case, I want to place apart the drug focussed interpretation. So to me, this song talks about a great load of anger accumulated in a person who has been tormented or abused (emotionally and in other human aspects) in his or her life.

The Riot is an explosion of anger, anger against a cop, so anger you can beat his sh t out of him like is implied in the first line, also that line represents a violent action against an authority figure I guess.

Then in the same lyrics, the same Riot Elliott is talking about takes place and is brutally and violently repressed, "a punch in the stomach makes sons into daughters" that line is condensing all the frustration of a violent riot. When the police or any authority figure comes and punch your sh t out of you.

So to me, this song talks about those authoritarian issues and how violence is part of a bigger world and human frustration.

Like a Marine in a boot camp, they make you a Marine by just kicking your arse off, they make you a "son" but a docile-obedient "daughter" at the same time. So to me, this is the main violent-authoritarian metaphor.

@[pat1032312:43941] Elliot's Mother was part of the abuses to Elliot. Not another victim of Charlie Welch, his step-father. Bunny Welch, Elliott's Mother always knew some kind of abuse happened to Elliott, and she never did anything to act against Elliott's abuser who was his own husband. Now, Elliott had a blind loyalty to his own biological mother because some times she treat his own 1st son as a loveful mother, so that also served to cover Elliott's abuser. Elliott left Texas because the systematic abuses of Charlie and the dispictable passive attitude of his own Mother. Now, in Tormented Saint, a quite complex but so damn well documentated Elliott's biography, you can read how Elliott saw his mother as a treachourous person, that just teared Elliott's appart. She was also an abusive woman because she never get rid of Charlie. She was a freakin rubber loop toy as you well described.

Elliott Smith – Waltz #2 Lyrics 3 years ago
In my opinion this song is strongly and alomst strictly autobiographical.

And it is about the mixed feelings towards his Mother Bunny. Who never really protected Elliot from the emotional, physical, and most likely sexual abuses of Elliot's step father Charlie Welch.

In the song he is singing with rage about how his mother was just indolent -the China doll line-. And at the same time he almost can't belive how she is married with that Monster, a guy who beat Elliot and demanded from him total obedience, discipline and perfection (read some Elliot biograpghy to know what im talking about), so it is clear. He is done with an i dolent mother so Elliot is leaving home -he left home when he was 14 YO to live with his biological Father in portland Oregon- that is why he is singing the "Im never gonna know you now, but im gonna love you anyhow" line. He is singing that as a chorous because he knows his own mother, now Bunny Welch betrayed him and never really protected him from his now abusive husband Charlie Welch. So yeah, Elliot is recognizing he will be gone from Dallas where he lived with his mother and that vile monster, so he will not be able to know her mother more. But anyway he is going to love her despite his despicable and indolent attitude.

Is a hard song, a song which always reminds me how we can have such spoiled idiotic parents who never really protect us or love us fully, but that blood line make you love them almost by insctint.

Is so sad what happened with Elliot in 2003. For me the really monsters guilty for his own suicide are Elliot's biological parents and that unpunished monster Charlie Welch was. I'd punch on the face of that abusive bastard.

@[OpenMindAudio:43136] Dude did You know Elliot was sexually abused by his m.fkn step-father???

Also Charlie Welch, that m.fkn unpunished monster. Was physically abusive with Elliot who beat him since he was 4 YO and also was emotionally abusive with him. He demanded from him "perfection" as the same Elliot said. That it is why in this song he refers to that kind of abuse.

At the same time this song is about a mixed feeling of love and hate to his mother Bunny, who apparentñy always was neglect to him and never protected Elliot of the abuses of his m.fkn step father.

That is what this song is about. And yeah you may reflect the psychological fact that one person repeat the same fked up relationship patterns he/she learns in his family, so yeah he may be singing about loving a careless woman like his mother was.

Elliott Smith – Pictures of Me Lyrics 3 years ago
Well, I had felt this way with some of my own pictures of the past. Not because I used to look ugly or stupid you know, but because of all the f*cked up the context, I was living in back then. So yeah, some pictures even from yourself aren't lovely or pretty even to look at.

So yeah, I think in some pictures people are like forced to smile when they are living in a pretty freaked-up context. You know like those Christmas pictures you are forced to take even when your own family is ruined morally, or when you had intrafamilial violence problems and stuff like that. Some people nowadays had a bunch of pics on their FB or Instagrams, and yeah some of them may reflect legitimate happiness, but some others are just to get validation from the rest, and that's so sad and some kind of pathetic and very generalized in many people.

This song makes me remember that exactly, I mean, how many can take a picture that is a total fake pose, You may live in hell and be forced to smile nevertheless...

And well, Elliott was totally abused by his mother f*cker stepdad, Charlie Welch, that's a fact, any psychological sexual abuse test would affirm that now, with the overwhelming emotional evidence Elliot left. So imagine that! Elliott himself was forced many times to take pictures next to this mother-f*cking monster his stepdad was. He was forced to smile for those familiar mandatory pictures, that actually hid a horrid abusive truth. So yeah for him looking at those pictures must be dreadfully painful, especially when he lived in Texas during the early 80s.

A hard-living childhood is something that marks you forever and sadly never leaves, you always carry that hell within you. So pictures are only a sad terrible memory, even if you may look "happy" in them.

So I only hope Charlie Welch and Elliot's own mother rot in hell! they were the real monsters in Elliott's life. Because Charlie abused him and his mother never act against that. F*ck them both.

It may be about anxieties, as nails are a clear symbol of anxiety as many people used to bite them whenever they feel anguished or anxious.

I guess this poem is inspired by his sad leg episode... feels like a quite nice depression hospital song.

I agree definitely, it is like if Mark is singing and asking cool questions to a ghost, now he is a ghost, feel like I ask him those questions whenever I listen to this song.

Neutral Milk Hotel – April 8th Lyrics 3 years ago
This song actually made me remember my ex-couple house. And how I spend there almost 8 years of my life every afternoon with her in her room You Know.

The other day I just saw an actual screenshot of her house on Google maps and looked fuking eerie and spooky. The house actually has the form of a coo-coo clock and her bedroom main window just faces the street. So when this song talks about the window, I almost had a flashbulb memory of her room. But in that picture the freakin' house looks doomed or like in another dimension and also the room looks so dark as if the damn house is haunted.

Also the whole song I can't help but relate it to a strong nostalgic memory, In my case is a whole uncomfortable memory because this lady just dumped me off after 8 stupid years and got almost immediately pregnant from another guy... So yeah all of that was a quite shitty traumatic experience for me, and a one I couldn't remove from my freakin head like even 5 years after that stuff or so...

So yeah to me this song talks about that stubborn memory some guy has about a girl and how he may want to be sleeping on her bed the way he used to. But now he can't and he probably never will again. So yeah NMH songs are quite tripping and pretty personal to me.

In case you ask this is the freakin house I remembered. https://goo.gl/maps/KeqpBJ72HQkM5Zem9
