@[Cherub:19043] Rock Beautiful music, depressing lyrics. Incredible juxtaposition. A very insightful song by one of my favourite songwriters. (See my interpretation - theofromcanada.) |

@[Reynard:19042] Muldrake You have hit the nail on the head. Listen to the Peter Gabriel version to hear music that more appropriately fits the lyrics. |

@[b:19041]-rad1796 Definitely NOT uplifting for sure. I think he wants people to "think" and not become too infatuated with technology. (See my comments - theofromcanada.) |

Graceland was released in 1986. Today's date is 21 March 2017. (I note this because of my comments regarding technology which follow.)
Throughout the song the lyrics relate either to technology (eg. the bomb in the baby carriage, the slo-mo camera, the staccato signals of constant information) or human beings (eg. the soldiers who may have been injured by the bomb, the family trying to survive in the harsh desert, and don't cry baby don't cry).
(Had the song been written today I'm sure there would be references to the internet, social networking, cars powered by electricity, rockets to Mars, etc)
Anyway, I think the song illustrates how, as a species, we are adept at advancing technologically very quickly, but cannot seem to move forward living in harmony. (And ultimately this will be our undoing - not stated, but implied).
The Paul Simon version is bouncy and cheery and the seriousness of the lyrics get lost in music. To get a real feel for this song, listen to the version by Peter Gabriel. |
