Wish I could put properly into words how much this song means to me (especially the remake on the Japanese edition of the Isolate album). I'll try it anyway. I believe this song is about a man who is presently very dissatisfied with his own life. He wasn't true to himself during his life and now has to face the consequences of it. I'm staring out the window It's raining outside The fall has caught up with me I feel that I can't breathe, wished I couldn't see I lived my life through someone else Long ago I made a choice that I thought would make a difference and lead me back on track In the first stanza, the speaker finds himself beholding the autumnal rain from his window. In this case, fall is the season that precedes winter, which would be the end of life (i.e. death) or the end of a period (whatever the following results might be). Therefore, he sees himself close to the end and then goes over all his life, trying to make sense out of it. The ending suffocates his thoughts and he wished he didn't have to face time catching up with him. He regrets the choices he made in the past thinking they would do him well and "lead him back on track". Silence from angels above Leaving us behind in a time when we're in need of someone to hold close to your heart I am just another leaf falling down on the ground Then, we have the chorus. The speaker feels abandoned by the angels who should be looking out for him in the time he needs the most and doesn't have anyone to "hold close to his heart". I'm standing at a crossroad I don't know what to do I will not live to see another day The time has come to face the end This is a necessary thing 'Cause I will hold your hand and say, "Will you forgive me?" Long ago I made a choice that I thought would make a difference and lead me back on track In the second stanza, the speaker has a hard choice to make and doesn't seem to be able to decide. It could be either ending everything (which could easily mean committing suicide, but also checking out of a sane life) or embracing the choice of not living through someone else anymore (even for the last moments of his life) and accepting its scars and consequences, whatever they might be. Either way, life continues to pass him by and he's just another leaf falling onto the ground. And winter is coming. |

This song's lyrics kind of remind me of Black Celebration by Depeche Mode. I guess they complement each other to me. Both of them talk about someone turning to their significant other for help or to offer it. I'll set the speaker in this song as a he and the speaker in Black Celebration as a she just for making it easier to explain. In my opinion, he’s telling her that he'll always be there for her, offering support and telling the truth she needs to hear, even if that might be hard for her to accept, as we can infer from the verses below: Who's gonna tell you when It's too late Who's gonna tell you things Aren't so great She sees in him the anchor of her life. The one person who shines light when she's in her darkest hours and who is able to see through all the shit she's been having to deal with. And she recognizes that in the verses in Black Celebration below: To celebrate the fact That we've seen the back Of another black day I look to you How you carry on When all hope is gone Can't you see Your optimistic eyes Seem like paradise To someone like Me I want to take you In my arms Forgetting all I couldn't do today Seeing the back of another day is her "black celebration", like it means a day less of unhappiness. She looks to him and doesn't understand how he seems to keep up and carry on when things seem so hopeless. The look in his "optimistic eyes" is like an instant panacea for her and she relies on him to "forget everything she couldn't do today" like leaving home, taking her medicine, not breaking down or just getting better in general. He's still there for her, but says she won't be able to heal and move on if she doesn't understand the reasons for her life being upside down. Whether she eventually realizes that or not, he'll still drive her home tonight. These verses below show to me that he's not just sweet, but also firm and sincere in saying she's got to deal with her situation. You can't go on Thinking nothing's wrong Who's gonna drive you home tonight And there she is. Still not able to pull herself out of her situation, still not able to make sense of his "strong belief" and wishing just a relief instead (death or suicide probably) To celebrate the fact That we've seen the back Of another black day I look to you And your strong belief Me, I want relief Tonight His consolating touch is everything she wants and longs for, and feeling it might numb her pain for a while and make tomorrow bearable. She asks for him to hold her in his arms so he can also forget he once again couldn't to help her out of her issue (everything he couldn't do today) and forgive himself for it. Consolation I want so much Want to feel your touch Tonight Take me in your arms Forgetting all you couldn't do today Although theses two songs are different and make sense out of themselves, I really think they complement each other. I’ve loved both for a while now, but not until some days ago was I able to notice how they beautifully connect. |
