glskillj is right that this is based on an old (and rather raunchy) blues song. The booklet for the 1996 CD quotes Jorma Koukonen: "It was just a song I learned at Antioch College. Basically, the singer is accusing his woman of infidelity based on the shape she's in, the way she smells, etc. Then he finally tells her to get out. |

@[JimRonski:39000] The original words were actually "Pass the pipe around the campfire/and everybody's high"! John liked his pot. He cleaned up the lyrics later. I also remember reading a short interview with him in High Times magazine. Still a great song, though. |

@[Darth:38999] Eddie Vader Yes. He liked his pot back in the day. The original lyrics were "Pass the pipe around the campfire and everybody's high." He cleaned up the lyrics as he got to be more famous, but I remember hearing this on the radio. Plus I've got the 45! ;) |

The last lines are:
And now we're out of danger
I guess they'll sound, "All Clear',
Throw some pennies in the fountain
And wish for a better year, for a better year
I think the song is deliberately blurred and mysterious musically and lyrically. I think may be about feelings of loneliness that prey on us without warning and that may equally without warning go away. |

| The Clientele – From a Window Lyrics

The song meaning seems straightforward, although told in beautifully poetic lyrics: an ill or disabled boy can't go out to play with other children. His mother puts him to bed, and he dreams of sailing away. He wakes to find it isn't true and is sad. This is characteristic of The Clientele's: they write a song that lures you into listening with gorgeous catchy music, as this one does--and then the lyrics tell a story that breaks your heart. |
