Canned Heat – I Got Loaded Lyrics 11 months ago
Edit 2: This song is so subtle in the shifts - once the "kill it dead" transition happens, the guitar takes on this death-grip then quick release for a better death-grip sound... over and over until the reason and the grip is lost to something else.

Even the bass, without becoming monotonous and bored, by the second third of the song is on the same idea it has been but with a different evolution... not something to notice without focus and headphones... which makes so lovely...

This track even comes with its own tinnitus, if you listen closely to the second verse.

Holy crap - I thought I was the only one with that idea!

Weird.

I described it as "a song a gorgeous trailer-trash stripper would demolish the stage to and give the Joes PTSD."

Les Claypool's Fancy Band – Filipino Ray Lyrics 2 years ago
Interestingly enough, a Google search for "Filipino Ray" brought me to Ray Jónsson, a Filipino-Icelandic soccer player. Quite the parental match, I guess.

Swervedriver – Last Train to Satansville Lyrics 3 years ago
Another one which came to mind after watching What's in the Box - The Twilight Zone: Season 5, Episode 24...

Similar parallels: the visions drive the main character into making them reality... Freaky, but amazingly beautiful.

Garbage – #1 Crush Lyrics 4 years ago
Politics.
Religion.
Identity.

Anything, or anyone, which becomes the singular focus of someone do compelled to see nothing but that one object or idea.

"You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored"

The burning intensity of insanity.

Such a great and creepifyin' track.

Swervedriver – Son of Mustang Ford Lyrics 4 years ago
In retrospect, I finished "The Hitch-Hiker" - season 1, episode 16 of The Twilight Zone... and this song almost perfectly fits the premise of both my previous comment and the song.

The premise of the episode is that a woman is travelling across the country and, following a tire blowout, always encounters a hitchhiker she never picks up. It slowly makes her erratic and paranoid, and when she finally tries to call her mother to tell her about all of this, she finds out her mother is still greiving the loss of her daughter following an accident weeks before due to a tire blowout at speed...

So... Yeah... Pretty damn cool...

Swervedriver – Duress Lyrics 4 years ago
Edit: I went back and listened again and realized that the guitar became much more fuzzy and intense - in fact, the whole musical composition took a turn for the surreal and enveloping - the moment he first said "kill it dead." Changes the entire song with that realization of the narrator.

Swervedriver – Son of Mustang Ford Lyrics 4 years ago
To me, this is the perspective of someone who had been killed in a car crash some time before, but has yet to realize it beyond the pain of not getting out of that state of limbo; neither in heaven or in hell... While there is the realization that the body they saw was their own, they just are not permitted to realize what exactly this means due to the pain of their own demise.

Swervedriver – Sci-Flyer Lyrics 4 years ago
"Below the apes above the angels"

This line has always started me thinking about how aliens would categorize the scope of our potential as a species. Sub-primal and egocentric versus morally enlightened and capable of self-sacrifice towards a better outcome for others.

We can exist below the lowest closest genetic relative and beyond the spiritual beings we can imagine...

Swervedriver – Duress Lyrics 4 years ago
Man... this song was the theme of my failing marriage a decade ago...

"And when the dawn begins to creep
Sunlight finds you in a heap"

Yeah, hung-over from seeking liquid perspective in a finite pool of bad decisions. Been there; woke up like that so many times.

"And how you wish that you could sleep
Forget the lies that you've been told"

Perhaps, it was the tranquility of the lie of marriage... Perhaps it was chasing the American dream we thought we wanted but was nothing but a sham of idealism, garnished with that growing twinges of doubt and resentment - both at the fabrication of what "perfection" might be and that the "till death do us part" bit was a bit more than we really should have chased after...

"You think you're settin' free your soul
But you're really gettin' old"

You think that the money and status of suburbia might be "it" but what it really is is just that slow leak in an inflatable lifeboat...

"You've dreamt of divin' in the sea
Your outstretched arms in front of me"

This... this line was in my mind every time I dove off the transom of my boat following the anchor being set... freedom in the danger of a medium which is both supportive and suffocating at the same time. I still think of that boat and those moments every time I hear this line.

"And how you wished that you could breathe
In the grip of ecstasy
When the shadows follow me
And the night won't set me free"

Back to the "happiness" that should be a refreshing breath... but in reality is that frothy in-between mess from the maelstrom of the chaotic, blown-out surf that is life... Oh, the lurking specters of obligation and approval... but tomorrow is right back at it all over again.

"You wish someone could love you less
Longing for that one caress"

All the time, I kept thinking: "Friends. Let's just be friends before we destroy each other. Please?"

"I see you sink under Duress
And when you wanna kill it dead
You let it throttle you instead"

Aaaand the best part: that duress - that state of being compromised at the hands of an enemy - is something that, from the perspective of Adam, is something which forces the resignation of the spirit. Why bother? Oh, this line pisses me off because I took a much different route - rather than wallow, I dug in and persevered.

However, in looking back at the words, the idea of breathing is vital. "You wish you could breathe..., "You let it throttle you instead." The person isn't the point of view, it is a third person looking at it the situation and state that the person is in and making a sad observation of how they are giving up on everything. Choking on indecision... or under the pressure.

The melody is key as well - melodic transitioning to aggressively repetitive. Driving. Maddening. Mournful. Compelling. Increasing in complexity (the bass line adds one more layer of detail with each iteration...) Kinda like... being stressed the hell out and overthinking the simplest thing... kinda like I just did.

Kate Bush – The Morning Fog Lyrics 4 years ago
I just had an epiphany in looking at the comments here:

What if the song is cyclic, much like "All Along the Watchtower" by Dylan/Hendrix?

Hear me out:
The protagonist survives somehow, and with the realization that she needs to reaffirm her appreciation for her family and friends, hops on a boat to visit them and tell them... Unfortunately, this creates the conditions for the exact tragedy to occur.

Given the borderline demented creativity Kate is prone towards, it wouldn't surprise me... and yes, 36 years later she is still one of my all-time favorite artists - timeless, cerebral, and enchanting.
