Deer Tick – Ashamed Lyrics 8 months ago
This will seem strange but I think this song is about someone who killed a coworker or manager at a McDonald’s and goes to trial gets executed. “Hit him with a book and how he crumbles, Oh you should see how the arches tumbled , They’re golden no more “ The Golden Arches says McDonald’s to me, and then he’s standing on trial with the courtroom illustration “it’s painted on canvas, an eternal testament to how we are so animalistic”— killing someone in an act of violence is an act of animal brutality. He’s commenting too on people seeing it as tragic and if they feel pity towards him “if your eyes water, you got your favorite number to spin”— the outcome being uncertain. He’s also seeking redemption asking for that purest light to shine on him. In the end he’s fantasizing about what his life could have been right as he is being put to death. It might seem like a strange interpretation but I do wonder if he wrote this based on something that really happened. After all, he wrote about John Wayne Gacy in Clowning Around.

Definitely about Gacy— Deer Tick lyrics are brilliant especially on the first two albums— this is a clever one for sure!

Radiohead – Codex Lyrics 8 months ago
A correction? I think he says “Just dragon flies, Flying to the south” The comments on Buddhism are really interesting! I think this song is about loss of innocence as we get older. As kids we do things like jumping off a pier into a lake— pure in the moment and innocent— with nobody getting hurt. Sleight of hand and we’re older, and our decisions and actions begin to take on the weight of sometimes having to make decisions that hurt others. The final lines to me are a wish that things could be pure and simple again— the water is clear and innocent— not like the pains and responsibilities of life as an adult. The beauty of this song is hard to put into words but every time I listen to it I feel all the joys and regrets of my life. It’s a masterpiece.

Angus and Julia Stone – Yellow Brick Road Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this an homage to artists and songs that influenced him. Though some lines can be seen as drug references, there are too many other specific hints. Yellow Brick Road by Elton John. Spoonful of Sugar from Mary Poppins. Heart of Gold by Neil Young. Weatherman by Delbert McClinton (check out the lyrics about making the sun come out). Janis Joplin famously skinny dipped at Woodstock and covered Somewhere Over the Rainbow wth Big Brother and the Holding Company ( that skinny dipping girl made the bluebirds sing). The revolver reference could be about The Beatles' Revolver album. All the colors of the rainbow line reminds me of the cover to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. The high could just be his being high on music. The California sound and the LA scene were huge in rock music. That's my take! Brilliant song any way you slice it.
