The first line is "When the robin builds in the holly tree It's a sign of life, its gentle victory" The Midwife is inducing labor with the "tansy and the chamomile tea". and she tells Emily she "placed a holly sprig by the doctor's door" To tell the doctor of the victory of the baby's birth. This is why the Dr will be careful which way he goe; not when he is coming to them, but when he leaves them and takes the back roads- to miss the "one too many horses" who are pulling the cart to take her away.- so he can take the baby away to safety. The new wife in the house can feel the ghost of Emily near the hearth, that's why she is cold, but when she nears the hearth she says "there was a baby". Childbirth is messy and there is likely still evidence of childbirth. To me the last line suggests that there was a baby and the Dr saved it. |
