I think this song is about holy wars, in particular the First Crusade that happened back long ago. "Don't ever take a single second to breathe, They're gonna send me on a murdering spree." This part is very literal in a sense that the Roman Catholic church sent many of its capable men on a murdering spree to go kill people of other religions that wouldn't convert. The part saying don't take a second to breathe means don't get comfortable, because work must be done for the church. "I can not wait to dance upon your grave." Most of the people were on board with the holy crusade and were eager to reclaim the holy lands and stop the enemy under their god. "They don't even have a soul left to be saved." Once again, most of them believed that the ones who believed in another god and not in Christ were mislead and could not be saved. "You would eat your young." This recurring line makes me think of it as statement towards how people treated their devotion of faith which was distorted by the church. Saying that they would eat there young if their church asked for it. (I don't think this means literally eat, but in the stance of killing them or sacrifice them for the church and their god.) "We swam among the northern lights," And hid beyond the edge of night Waiting for the dawn to come, And sang a song to save us all." According to text's: the northern lights were a celestial call that the roman catholic church interpreted as the time to reclaim the holy lands and go to war. They hid in the darkness to do there dark deeds for there god, waiting for the dawn to come meaning waiting for the war and fighting to be over, and the song to save us all was there way of telling themselves what there doing was justified, and that they would enter eternal life for this. "Hey, oh, oh, you want a holy war?" Biggest evidence I think this is about the crusades. "I am alive, I'm just playing dead. I'm gonna say what should have never been said." As the wars progressed, most people who did the senseless killing felt empty and they thought they were the walking dead even though they are alive. Most showed regret and remorse for their actions and wish they could take their initial actions and feelings back. "The giants of the world are crashing down. The end is near, I hear the trumpets sound." The giants were the relics (statues, palaces, etc.) of false gods came crashing down once the christian reclaim the cities back. The giants could also be the idea of the false gods themselves as well. After all said and done and the first crusade ended, many rejoiced seeing that they thought there mission was done and the trumpets could be sounded declaring victory. I could be very wrong, but I think it makes since that this song is about the crusades and holy wars in general and how faith has been misguided and used as a weapon of self interest. The song uses the holy first crusade as an example of what they can do to people. Let me know what you guy think :) |
