Hozier – Like Real People Do Lyrics 5 years ago
It took me a surprising amount of time to figure this one out, but after thinking about the first verse more, it finally makes sense.

When looking back at the start of his relationship, he feels like he was brought back to life by this person, "hands pulled me from the earth" and he asks why this person who saved him was there in the first place, what was she there to bury? Was it her past mistakes, an old love? Was she there to put something behind her, or even to dig something up to go back to? He realizes these questions are irrelevant, he already knows what she's gone through, or at least knows not to bring it up. "in some sad way, I already know" maybe because he's been through it himself. It's easy to focus on oneself when you feel someone has saved you, and it may take longer to realize...wait, how did this person know to do that? What happened to this person, what's their story, why do they understand me? But...he let's it go. Let's just kiss and be in love without over analyzing our pasts. He resigns himself to being happy over informed. Let's be real, he says.

@[BonnieT:34254] also, to add, the line "it gets pretty cold when at 23 years old you've been running from death your whole life" is about how he has been suicidal a very long time, and surrounded by people who are. In the song "A Portrait Of", he says the line "since I was 13 I've struggled with manic depression" that song is very good and I highly recommend you listen to it. This entire album goes together well. Each song tells a different part of his story.

Sorority Noise – Where Are You? Lyrics 5 years ago
This entire album came after the loss of a few of singer Cameron Boucher's friends, and he went through a period of feeling very alone. In this song, he talks about how even though they are gone, he feels like they are still with him every step of the way, and if they can be there for him, then why aren't any of his friends that are still alive there for him? All the verses in the song start with someone else is speaking to him and he answers them. In the second verse, he is asked if he needs anything, and he essentially says, 'well, I'm still here, aren't I? Isn't that all I really need at this point, all I need to do is stay alive even though they didn't?' "I've seen both sides of the field and lost more blood than one should yield" is referring to how he has seen suicide both as the one who wants to die, and as the one that has experienced the loss, the loss of those he was close to and considered family, making them "his blood" in some way, and he's lost more of that blood than his own body was capable of holding. "Is there anything I can do?" another question, which he answers with irritation, because everyone keeps asking him that and he doesn't know what to tell them, all he knows is that he's tired of people worrying about him and trying to help him get over it, when he's not ready to be over it yet. "Cameron, how can I help?" which he answers "take care of yourself," because he's lost too many friends already. The best thing anyone could do for him is to stay alive, because he can't stand to lose more.

I thin this song is about feeling too broken for someone, and wanting to be with them and be there for them, but not thinking you'll ever be able to help them go further in life like they deserve to.

Bastille – Winter of Our Youth Lyrics 5 years ago
This song is about not being over someone, and floods of memories and nostalgia just keep coming back to hurt you. "This is the winter of our youth, but I'm not there yet." I interpret this a few different ways. Winter could mean that the series of events that are causing him painful nostalgia took place in the winter and the season reminds him of that now. Winter is cold, and the opening line of the chorus is "I know the winter's getting colder, but why just cause we're a little older, do I relive it all?" The cold and its increase in strength could represent the cold between them, how they are growing more and more cold to one another as time goes on or the more they were together. It's not just a winter, it's a winter of youth. This happened when he was young, and now that he's older he's thinking about it again and trying to understand it. "Oh, I'm peddling backwards
Even if I'm peddling alone, Can't help it, I relive it all" He's thinking back into his past, but he thinks he's the only one of this former pair that still thinks back on what they were and had and all the memories. "It's 4 AM here comes the fear, I'm not prepared yet, And when we pick over the past we glorify it" my favorite line of the song. It's 4 AM, he's nostalgic and as the song suggests, drinking, and he's afraid. He's afraid to think back on the good as well as the bad, he's afraid to miss it, and not being prepared...he'll never be prepared. You never fully move on from things like this. When we look back into our memories, we tend to be biased, think of it as being better or worse than it was, and in a drunken nostalgia trip of a youthful romance, you are likely to think only about the good parts, especially if you aren't over someone, or if you don't even have any bad parts. "I've let myself bathe in the past for way way way too long" meaning he thinks about this more than he thinks he should and he indulges these thoughts, he lets himself hold on to it. Overall, a great, raw, relatable song.

NF – If You Want Love Lyrics 5 years ago
This song hits me where it hurts because the lyrics apply to my life and to the exact memories it makes me think of. I started listening to this song a lot my freshman year of high school. Someone close to me mentioned it when it came on the radio at Taco Bell late one night. That closeness with that person faded and it hurt me more than anything had at that point. I didn't understand what changed, why he couldn't stand to even look at me anymore, why our conversations got dry when we talked and why I was replaced. It never made sense to me, and it hurt, because I still only wanted him. If you want love, you have to go through the pain. If you want trust, you have to give some away. I gave all my trust and felt all the pain...but love never came.

Damien Rice – Rootless Tree Lyrics 5 years ago
I realize I'm about 14 years late to this but...This song is pure raw emotion, especially in the live version (from the Basement) on YouTube. This relationship is crumbling slowly and then all at once and they're hurting each other, but they still love each other, or at least what's keeping them holding on is the love they once had. The chorus is the expression of anger one might feel during or after a fight. He feels trapped by this relationship. The opening line "What I want from you is empty your head" saying he wants her to just get on with it and say what they know they're both saying, to let it all out and get some closure so maybe they can finally move on from one another. "Don't stain you bed" could be referring to not sleeping with people that are bad for you or always wanting to end things on good terms but in this case it looks impossible. "What I want from us is empty our minds" again same as the first line, getting it all out in the open. "and we fake our falls and fracture the times" they're not really in love the way they wish they were, faking falls as in faking falling in love. "and we go blind when we've needed to see" pretending things are fine at every red flag. "Fuck you, and all we've been through I said leave it, 'cause it's nothing to you and if you hate me, then hate me so good that you can let me out...'cause it's hell when you're around" a VERY emotional and hurt chorus. This is something one must experience and strongly to write and sing as emotionally as he does, especially in the live version which is my favorite. "What I want from this is learn to let go, no not of you, of all that's been told" He's learned love isn't what you're told it is from a young age, it's beautiful but it's tragic, and painful when someone doesn't know how to do it right. He wants to let go, not of her, but of his expectations of love. He doesn't want to let go of her because he loves her even though it hurts. "and killers reinvent and believe" this line is a bit harder to get for me, if anyone has any thoughts please share but I'm thinking that it's that love can kill, if not the body then the mind and soul, and people that don't know how to love do it in different ways, and he's been with these killers who do this, there's so many different ways to love and those people think they're doing it right. Or maybe they reinvent themselves and believe they've actually done it, but the truth is that people don't change that much when it comes to love.

A truly great song. If you've read this far, thank you. I hope that you learn and recover from whatever pain brought you here.

Two people that love each other but don't fit. Classic. Too many differences, even the "little things" standing out between the two of them. He's caught between what he knows in his head and feels in his heart. He knows they don't work, he "tries to resists" but "still wants it all" so he's putting himself through this obviously flawed relationship knowing that it could only end in their. or at least his, destruction. He's imagining their life together, years in the future, but when he remembers how their pieces don't fit together in the puzzle of life, it breaks his heart. When he remembers the problems they're already having, it breaks his heart. Only a fool would continue to be with someone knowing it couldn't work...and "only fools do what I do"

This song for me...It makes me think of someone. I think it does that for most people. The genius of Chris Martin's lyrics is how universally brilliant and relatable they are. When someone leaves you without an explanation, and you're left to wonder what you've done wrong, if you've driven them away. You felt close to someone, like you were so close to meaning something to them, to being something more...they're a stranger now, but for a while...you saw sparks..and you thought they did too. But no matter what, you still love them.

He feels lucky to have the person he loves. Now, Ben Folds makes beautiful music, but sometimes he ruins sentiment with less than stunning lyrics, but when he gets it right, it's beautiful. The verses are odd, and he even recognizes it, but his message is that he is grateful to have been born at the same time as his soulmate, and that he couldn't imagine life without this person he loves.

This song is about loving someone with trust issues, whose been hurt, and assuring that when they're ready, you'll be there for them. A bulletproof vest is intended to keep its wearer safe, and possibly more specifically, protect the heart. With the windows all closed, shutting people out, from fear of being hurt. In a telescope lens when all you want is friends...I'll see you soon. Telescopes are used to see far away, and this person has distanced themselves from everyone, even though they still want someone close to them, they're just afraid of being hurt.

Ed Sheeran – Save Myself Lyrics 5 years ago
Doing more for others than they would do for me is kinda my lifestyle. It's painful, but I have no intention of changing, or letting the world make me cold. Nevertheless, I still know that I can't just keep giving, at some point I have to find a balance, to "save myself" before trying to save someone else. I found this song at a time in my life when all my energy was given to others, saving none for myself. I felt exhausted, and no one gave back what I gave away, I felt more lonely than ever. Because I'd always been there for others but they left the moment I needed someone, their actions deafening over their words. But..I'll never learn. I'll go back to rescuing that same person, now a stranger, but I guess that's just my nature...

Sorority Noise – A Portrait Of Lyrics 5 years ago
It's a fact that this song and its album are heavily influenced by the suicide of singer Cameron Boucher's close friend, Sean. At this time, a few other friends of his also died very young. This song and all others from this album come from a place of intense grief, and a feeling of complete loneliness. "He's always trying to fuck me to the tune of my favorite song" is saying that bad things always seem to happen when he's happiest, or involving the things that make him happiest. "Best friend torching your coat" I think means that his friend was his coat, the thing that kept him warm and safe and secure, but Sean torched himself, taking himself away from Cameron. "I'm not trying to say it's easy but I'm trying to say it's fine" is acceptance of his grief, like the line "I've still got some demons and they're not going to be leaving any time soon" he's accepted that he's unhappy, but he's coming to terms with the fact that that's just how it's going to be for him for a while.

The best part of this song is the end. It's harder to hear, the lyrics only there for those who truly want to listen. It's powerful. It's a fight with himself. It's background to who he is and what his thought process is amidst all his grief. I was surprised to open this tab and see that those lyrics weren't there, so I went ahead and added them. He screams them with such raw emotion and determination and pain. I fell in love with this song because of it. "But I have to have to be strong and I have to live my life as a continuation of theirs lost, and I have to do everything in my power to be the person that I can be and live my life the best way I fucking can and some days it's so hard to fucking stand" and its delivery, tells you e v e r y t h i n g about, and I don't want to say who he is, but about how he has decided to deal with his pain. It's strength. It's honest. And this? Is a damn. good. song.

Only Tyler knows what happened at that kitchen sink, so if he weren't here anymore, no one in the world would know. He created this song, his artwork that only he understands, to help himself find purpose, a reason to exist. The song is about creating that for yourself, finding something you and you alone understand to help you find the beginning of purpose and a reason to stick around. "Are you searching for purpose? Then write something, yeah it might be worthless. Then paint something, yeah it might be wordless, pointless curses, nonsense verses you'll see purpose start to surface, no one else is dealing with your demons meaning may be defeating them could be the beginning of your meaning, friend."

Coldplay – Everglow Lyrics 7 years ago
Chris Martin has always had a continuous theme in his music: flight. Well, it seems to have really begun in 2008 with the album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends and the line "Now my feet won't touch the ground" used in two songs and the title of one of them. From that time on, flight was his thing. Again in 2011 with the release of their 5th studio album "Mylo Xyloto", he again referenced flight. Such songs as "Up With The Birds", "Us Against The World" (with the lyric "and if we could float away, fly up to the surface and just start again, lift off before trouble just erodes us in the rain"), and "U.F.O."

Again in 2014 with the release of "Ghost Stories", a short album released just shortly after his divorce to now ex wife Gwenyth Paltrow with whom he has two children, the theme of flight continued still. Most notably in the very last song on the album, titled "O (Fly On)" the lyrics "A flock of birds hovering above, just a flock of birds, is how you think of love? Still I always look up to the sky and pray before the dawn, 'cause they fly always, sometimes they arrive, sometimes they are gone, they fly on." the birds of course as previously stated being a symbol of love, and the art for this album and even a music video ("Magic") have doves, a common symbol of love since the Greeks gods and the dove's affiliation with Aphrodite, goddess of love.

Again with the release of A Head Full Of Dreams, released early December of 2015, the theme of birds and flight was present, along with Diamonds. Second song on the album titled "Birds" with more lyrics about flight, and diamond, a stone formed under pressure.

Coldplay – Square One Lyrics 7 years ago
So this is a very powerful start to the album, and it sets the tone for it all very nicely. This album (X&Y released 2005) contains many themes of loneliness, being lost and confused, looking for your place in the world. It's vibe spacey and it's guitar driven. A little dark, even.

"You're in control, is there anywhere you want to go? You're in control, is there anything you want to know? The future's for discovering the space in which we travel in"

You have control of your life, no one else. So what do you want to do? The pressure of doing something with your life and not wasting a minute on this Earth, learning all there is to know about yourself and the world we live in and the space we live in and ultimately achieving enlightenment.

"You just want somebody listening to what you say, it doesn't matter who you are" similar themes to the more popular song on the album "Talk", a song in which the narrator is trying desperately to be heard by someone because he feels lost and ignored and alone.

"Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too? Are they bleeding all your colors into one? And if you come undone as if you'd been run through some catapult it fired you, you wonder if your chance'll ever come...or if you're stuck in Square one" okay so there's a l o t here to talk about, but first can we take a minute and appreciate these lyrics? The rhymes? How smoothly it all flows and the acoustic guitar and breakdown at the end of the song and how the very last line is the name of the song and the power it is delivered with? Okay now back to the meaning.

"Is there anybody out there who is lost and hurt and lonely too?"
So like I said this album follows the narrative of loneliness, which is odd to me considering this album was released shortly after he married his now ex wife Gwenyth Paltrow. This narrator is feeling lost and hurt and lonely and just wants someone that understands his pain to be there with him.

"Are they bleeding all your colors into one?" destroying your happiness and creativity, turning you from a bright and joyful individual into a crushed soul. Beautiful lyric.

"..You wonder if your chance'll ever come or if you're stuck in square one" will you ever get the chance to be heard and understood? Will you ever get the chance to love and be loved? Will your day ever come, or will you be forever stuck in the same place you started, sad and alone...in Square One.

Great start to a great album

We're all living our lives, circling and circling, looking for a purpose, a point to it all. We go about our daily routines, every day the same.
"The same play" all the world's a stage, right?
"You don't have to hold your head up high" it's okay to admit you're upset, lost, hurt, confused, you don't have to pretend to know what you're doing, none of us really know. What is this life for? This song is a beautifully drum driven cry of confusion yet also reassurance. It's good.

Band of Horses – The Funeral Lyrics 7 years ago
I think it's about loving someone with issues. Maybe they're addicted to something, or maybe they're suicidal. But you know things are bad, and you've emotionally and mentally prepared for the worst, you're ready for their funeral. You know any day could be their last.

"It's really too late to call so we wait for morning to wake you, it's all we got" you don't know if they're okay or not. You're scared, you're worried, and there's nothing you can do from a distance. They aren't answering their phone, so your only hope is that they fell asleep and you try calling them again in the morning. Nothing you can do, so just...go to sleep and hope for the best.

"To the outside the dead leaves lay on the lawn. Before they died, they had trees to hang their hope" so everyone else sees the sad story, they see the aftermath "oh it's such a shame ___ is an addict" or "___ killed themself? That's terrible, they should have gotten help..." they don't know what happened, they don't know the pain and suffering, the late nights talking, the relapse, they don't know, because they're on the outside of it all. They see the dead leaves on the lawn. But the people that have been there, they remember those leaves bright and alive and hanging on so dearly to those tree branches.

"To know you is hard, we wonder. And to know you, all wrong, we were" They thought they knew this person. But they didn't. This person changed. This isn't the same person they used to know. Before the drugs or before the alcohol or before the depression. Whatever the reason, this person is different.

"To know me as hardly golden is to know me all wrong, they were" I look at this as the other person's perspective, they still see themself as golden, but everyone else's opinions of them have changed. They're losing hope, they've stopped seeing the gold. They've done all they can and hope for the best.

Sorority Noise – No Halo Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is about human emotion, how we process emotion. The music video also follows these themes, and I highly suggest you watch it.

It's about grief. "This last week, I slept 8 hours total, I barely sleep" not being able to sleep out of grief, thoughts, sorrow. This person is mourning a loved one, as indicated by the chorus "I didn't show up to your funeral" however, what he did do? He showed up to their house. Perhaps he forgot they died, the brain in denial, unable to process this loss. Or maybe he didn't want to go to the funeral because that's not how he wanted to remember his friend. "God called you to fulfill a vacancy" yet another theme pertaining to the death of a loved one. The vacancy being in heaven.

I always think of it as being about humans destroying the Earth, and about how generally evil humanity is. All our separation and wars and hate, when we should be unified, peaceful and loving. We can't claim to be civilized and act like animals.

"Sunlight, opened up my eyes to see for the first time. It opened them up." light being shed on the issues of the world, and opening up your eyes to the corruption.

"Rivers will run dry, but not for the first time. Rivers will run." Just general human destruction to the Earth, using up all its natural resources.

"Hundreds of years in the future there could be computers looking for life on Earth" we'll all be dead and gone, and it could be from many different things. Disease, Famine, Nuclear war, unlivable temperatures, most likely heat. But we've done most of these things to ourselves, out of greed.

"Don't fight for the wrong side, just say what you feel like. Say what you feel." politics! A complicated but important aspect of humanity filled with opinions, some good some bad, but perspective is important, too. "Don't fight for the wrong side" well to each side, the other is the wrong side. You don't know who's right and who's wrong. It's confusing. But if you say what you feel, speak your opinion, trust your gut, DO SOMETHING to change what you don't like, you'll still be shut down by others. There is no way to win.

"You'll go backwards, but then you'll go forwards again." we as a society are always changing, new laws are being passed, societal awareness and acceptance, etc. These things could go both ways, and they do. We progress as a species, we move forward, but then we do something to screw it all up and we all go backwards again.

"Created, then drilled and invaded" we were created, (according to most religions) and then we immediately messed everything up. We invaded lands, drilled into the Earth, killed and wiped out countless species out of human greed and entitlement.

"If somebody made it, someone will mess it up" yeah, pretty self explanatory, but really true. We mess everything up.

"And you are not wrong to ask "who does this belong to?" it belongs to all of us..." either referring to land, and how we treat it like it's something we can own, or about the mess that we have made, asking who created it, looking for a simple reason that caused it, something that wasn't them, because they'd much rather believe a blatant lie than the truth, which is that this mess belongs to all of us. We all contributed, whether we admit it or not.

Overall a really amazing song and Chris did fantastic.

Coldplay – Talk Lyrics 8 years ago
This whole album is about feeling lost in life and feeling alone and stuck, unfulfilled and unimportant. Like a part of you is missing and you don't know what it is or where to find it. Not knowing what your future is going to hold, etc. (I will note this came out 2 years after he got married to his now Ex wife Gwyneth Paltrow.)

This person doesn't know what they're doing with their life, they feel lost and stuck and are reaching out to someone to talk to, thus the name "Talk." It is a conversation between two people, one is trying to understand the situation and thoughts and feelings of the other, and trying to offer comfort. The first verse is the person asking for help, and then it takes turns between the two.

I particularly love the last verse and I feel like it accurately sums up the whole song, and the general meaning, sung by Person 2:

"So you don't know where you're going and you want to talk? And you feel like you're going where you've been before? You'll tell anyone who'll listen that you feel ignored? Nothing's really making any sense at all, let's talk."

So you meet someone and start to fall in love, you feel so comfortable with this person, like you can finally be yourself, and it seems like nothing could go wrong. Like all the problems in the world and in your life disappear while you are with this person, because you're just so happy and in love.

Coldplay – 42 Lyrics 8 years ago
The beginning, "Those who are dead are not dead they're just living in my head" is saying that when people die, they aren't really dead they live on in your memory.

"And since I fell for that spell I am living there as well" He's living in his head, with all the people he's lost, because he would much rather live in a beautiful fantasy that a harsh reality, and have to accept that this person, or these people, are gone.

"Time is so short and I'm sure there must be something more" time is running out, he's not as young as he used to be and everyday he is closer to death, so he asks himself "Is this it? Is this all I want to do with my life? Is this all there is?" because he is feeling unfulfilled in his life.

"You thought you might be a ghost, you didn't get to Heaven but you made it close" so this song is about death, more specifically someone that has died, and he's being haunted mentally by this person, as previously stated in the line saying they are living in his head. Great song, Chris Martin has done it again.

@[aparksmusic:23849] I think it's related. The song is about death, so it makes sense that they would sneakily name it death.

@[leafvert:23848] In Japanese culture, 42 is an unlucky number, because the words for 4 and 2 when pronounced together sound like the Japanese word for death. That is also what the Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy was, I believe.

Twenty One Pilots – Guns For Hands Lyrics 8 years ago
@[MashedPE:23644] "When the sun sets it upsets what's left of my invested interest, interested in putting my fingers to my head" he is more depressed at night, when the sun sets, and he loses interest with the world. His fingers are the barrel of the gun, and putting them to his head would kill him, which he is interested in doing. "The solution is I see a whole room of these mutant kids" When he's playing a concert, he's looking down on a whole room of depressed teens. "Fused at the wrists" they are holding on so tightly to the guns in their hands, a metaphor for their suicidal habits and thoughts. "I simply tell them they should shoot at this. Simply suggest my chest and this confused music" When he sings this lyrics he is literally telling them this. He'd rather them kill him, he'd rather it be him, or at least it's to prove the point that they would never do it to him, and should never do it to themselves. You can't shoot at the music, but it's an extension of him. It's a bit hard to explain. "It's obviously best for them to turn their guns to a fist" to put their guns away, and to rally together in strength.

Also, someone said that this is the last song on the album and that "Now the night is coming to an end" is implying that the whole album takes place over a night, and that he's been awake and "The dark's not taking prisoners tonight" which I forgot to say, but thought.

Twenty One Pilots – Truce Lyrics 8 years ago
He's talking about us. That is a common theme in their songs. He rallies people together, and somehow makes "We're broken people" sound less like a sad cry for help, and more like a rallying battle cry to uplift and inspire us. He is well aware that the majority of their fanbase is mentally ill teenagers and young people.

"Now the night is coming to an end" a lot of suicides take place at night. It is when people are alone with their dark thoughts in dark places. But you made it through another night.
"The sun will rise and we will try again" 'we' is everyone. All the people in the world, all those that barely made it to morning, will do their best to make it through another day.

"Stay alive, stay alive, for me." This is Tyler pleading to us to stay alive, for him. In Guns For Hands, when he says "I'm trying to sleep but I can't when you all have guns for hands" is him worrying about us. Afraid for us. He cares about us. He stays up late worried about it. When he says this lyric, especially the second time, he sounds so emotional, so vulnerable, so desperate.

"You will die, but now your life is free" so he talks about being free a lot, and to me, he means being free from yourself, being free from your mind, and all your problems. But I don't think that's what he means here. This is different, and is saying that you are already free. That your life is free. And the thing is, your life IS free. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want. I am not saying without consequences, but you can still do all these things. You can turn your life around, you can get better, you can do whatever you want. So, out of all the things you can do, don't choose to kill yourself. You WILL die someday, but not now. Death is guaranteed, so don't force it. Avoid it all you can. Because once you're dead, that's it. That's the end of the roller coaster. No. Live life all you can.

"Take pride in what is sure to die." You're sure to die, not now, but someday. Take pride in yourself. You've done so much in your life, even the little things are something to be proud of. Take pride in yourself.

"I will fear the night again" He's knows it, he's accepted that his depression is a part of his life, and that it affects him at night. He doesn't let it control him, though. He's still hopeful. And if he'd killed himself when he was a teenager, look at what would be different today? Some of us wouldn't even be here. My point is, take a lesson from that. Your life is going to be amazing, but you have to be here to live it, and other people could even benefit from it.

"I hope I'm not my only friend" He's feeling insecure, like we all do sometimes. I hope I'm not my only friend. I hope other people care about me as much as I care about them. I hope they don't just fade out of my life and leave me all alone. I hope I'm not really just annoying and all my 'friends' aren't just too nice to tell me I'm not theirs. I hope someone else will someday understand me, and that I'm not my only friend.

This is a genius song, and even though it's so simple, it's important, and I love it so much.

If you are reading this, stay alive. For me.

Twenty One Pilots – The Run and Go Lyrics 8 years ago
Obviously, he has depression and is suicidal, but he doesn't want to burden anyone with it.

"Don't want to call you in the night time, don't want to give you all my pieces. Don't want to hand you all my troubles, don't want to give you all my demons. You'll have to watch me struggle from several rooms away..." it's him pushing people away. He doesn't want people to know everything about him, because in the past, he gave them all his pieces, and that person left, so now he keeps it all inside out of fear someone will do it again.

"But tonight, I need you to stay." This time, he needs them to stay. He needs them to stay because he has a particularly bad feeling about what he might do, or will do, if they leave.

"I've killed a man and all I know is I am on the run and go" I have killed a man could be two things, but they are both him. He either committed suicide, or he killed the person he used to be, or could have been.

Twenty One Pilots – Fake You Out Lyrics 8 years ago
Okay, so, everyone is saying that it's him lying about being okay, which is probably true, I just always thought he meant basically the complete opposite?

"I'll fall down and I'll break down and I'll fake you out all I wanna"
Like in more of a "the boy who cried wolf" way, if that makes any sense? He constantly tested people to see if they would actually care and if they'd do something every time, because if not, why bother telling them when something did happen? Like in a 'if they can't handle me at my best, they can't handle me at my worst' kind of way? And he is just going to do it all he wants, because a true friend would understand where he was coming from, being insecure and pushing people away by pulling them closer, and still show up for him every time, despite it being too much to ask sometimes. That's just how I've always thought of it.

Coldplay – Up & Up Lyrics 8 years ago
First off: These are amazing lyrics. Chris Martin has always been one of my favorite lyricists and every single line in this song has meaning. There are no filler words, things he said because they rhymed, he didn't write this song so it would be popular, he wrote it because it mattered. I don't understand every lyric to this song, but will try my best and deduct what I can from each line.

"Fixing up a car to drive in it again" Trying to get heal yourself after the destruction of a relationship so that you can love again. Chris Martin and his ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, divorced in 2014. The album "Ghost Stories", released before the album this track is on, "A Head Full Of Dreams", is clearly a reflection on his thoughts and feelings during that time and I believe this line is about him, and that most of the album was him healing after the events of 2014.

"Down upon the canvas working meal to meal" So down upon the canvas tells that this is a struggling artist. It could be referring to Chris Martin at the start of his career, or it could be referring to the people of the world, struggling, not being recognized for their talents and wasting away. Or perhaps it means we're all blotches of paint on the canvas of Earth. I'm not entirely sure of its meaning, but I trust that it has a good one and anyone can have their own interpretation of it.

"waiting for a chance to pick your orange field" waiting for your big break, waiting for opportunity to present itself, waiting for something to come along.

"See a performer, diamond in the rough" as William Shakespeare said, "All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts..." so, similar to the "We all are blotches of paint on the Earth's canvas" thing, we are all performers on a stage called the Earth. And many people are never recognized for their greatness; never seen by others and living out their lives one boring day after the next believing that they never could have been anything, and regretting all the chances they never took. Therefore, diamonds in the rough.

"See a bird soaring high above the flood it's in your blood, it's in your blood" And there are other people that stand out from the rough; the diamonds that get found by others or themselves. These are the people you hear about. They soar above the flood of the human race, striving to leave their mark on the world. And the "it's in your blood" thing? It could be about strength and confidence coming from within, or how naturally these things come to you. You can be a diamond in the rough, or you can be a bird soaring high above the flood. And I've also noticed how frequently he includes birds in his lyrics. Perhaps he never lost that child-like wonder of flight, or is using it as a metaphor for freedom and beauty and overall success. Either way, he's kinda obsessed with birds...

"Underneath the storm an umbrella is saying
Sitting with the poison takes away the pain
Up and up, up and up" so, I never really understood this verse, so I just looked it up and read one person named Sagar Chheda write their interpretation and it was better than what I had come up with, which was nothing. They say: "This particular verse has quite a deep meaning. There's an umbrella suffering in rain, has a heavy burden and no escape, but the umbrella says “sitting with the poison takes away the pain” meaning if you've already prepared yourself for the worst, your version of worse may not happen and that might make you feel that this wasn't as hard as I expected it to be."

And then there's the chorus, consisting mostly of the lyric "We're gonna get it together, I know, and go up, and up, and up". So, this clearly is an inspirational song, possibly written about humanity as a whole getting their act together, or about individuals that are going through difficulties. Either way, it is basically saying 'hey, I know times are hard right now, but things are going to be okay' which really is something that everyone needs to hear at some point in their life. I personally see it both ways, and believe it could be politically influenced.

"Lying in the gutter aiming for the moon trying to empty out the ocean with a spoon" so, lying in the gutter is somewhere no one wants to be. It is a metaphor for being in a bad place in life and wanting to be somewhere better but knowing that it's unlikely to get where you want to go, but continuing to dream. Trying to empty out the ocean with a spoon is trying to do something big to make a difference in the world but being just one person and feeling incapable, like you're a drop in the ocean. It all comes down to "can one person make a difference?"

"How come people suffer? How come people part? How come people struggle? How come people break your heart? Break your heart?" fairly self-explanatory, but it's asking why humans are so cruel to each other. Why we intentionally hurt one another even when it's not for personal gain. We claim to be an advanced, civilized, intelligent species but ultimately we are all animals in the end. We do things for ourselves out of selfishness and fail to uphold morals. So, basically, why?

"Yes I wanna grow and yes I wanna feel yes I wanna know so show me how to heal it up, heal it up" again, self-explanatory, but it's someone saying they want to heal themselves, again Chris Martin referring to his broken heart and learning to love someone and that person showing him how to love again.

"See the forest there in every seed" Say each person is a seed, and the world is a forest. Again, each person is part of a bigger picture.

"Angels in the marble waiting to be freed" I honestly don't really know with this line. If you have an idea, please reply to this comment.

After more chorus, is the line:
"Cause you can say what is, or fight for it
close your mind, take a risk. You can say "it's mine!" and clench your fist, or see each sunrise as a gift." (AMAZING LYRICS) It's presenting you with two options, saying 'you can talk about it, or you can do something about it' and 'you can claim something and keep others from it, or you can enjoy it with those people and be grateful it exists at all'

Then it repeats the chorus four more times before repeating the opening line followed by "When you're in pain, when you think you've had enough, don't ever give up." Which is, quite honestly one of the most important things about this song and dare I say one of the most important lyrics in music. It is then followed by:
"Believe in love" thus ending the song. It is an excellent song with an amazing message. He did it very well in the Superbowl 50 halftime show and I am so proud of them all.

Death Cab for Cutie – Different Names for the Same Thing Lyrics 8 years ago
The frustration of the imaginary boundaries that we place in an attempt to make things orderly but in doing so, only restrict access to the human right that is planet earth.

"An outdated map crumpled in my pocket" I think this lyric is often overlooked. "Outdated" as is there is a new version meaning the contents of it have changed.

The different places of the earth have so many different names but they really are all just different names for the same place.

@[mallowd:18203] You have a good point. I always assumed that he was referring to Christmas presents but now that you mention it, he could have bought things for the baby and returned them for cash to pay for the abortion but it would be kind of early to have bought baby items....I think it's about Christmas presents though.

Ben Folds Five – Brick Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is about him driving his girlfriend to get an abortion.

"She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly off the coast and I'm headed nowhere"
Bricks sink. They sink straight to the bottom. I think he's saying that either she's drowning him or that he has no idea where he's going and she at least knows which direction she is going.

In the music video they are standing in a room that is slowly filling up with water. He is literally drowning slowly.

This song is sad, but it's melody is rather sweet.
