I think the song is about the singer dying, not his girlfriend. STAY WITH ME HERE. Some bullet points: -"the painful scream that I heard last" could be interpreted as him hearing his gf scream right before he died. -"i lost my love my life that night" can be interpreted as he lost his life, not a his "life" re: his gf. Another point: in the 50s/60s, especially in the south, Christians believed (still do) in purgatory. A place you go to to pay for your sins before entering heaven. When interpreting a song you have to remember the place and time period it was conceived. When the lyrics say "she's gone to heaven so i got to be good, so i can see my baby when I leave this world." I don't think the world is Earth. Rather, he died, went to purgatory, his gf never remarried, died, went to heaven, and the singer is still paying for his sins so he can leave purgatory and be with his gf. So in summary: guy and girl driving, guy gets into an accident (his sin) he dies, she holds him one last time in the rain. He goes to purgatory to absolve himself of his "sin". Years go by, she never marries, she dies and goes to heaven, he's still in purgatory waiting for the day to be released so he can see her again. |

The part that goes: Well the engineer said before he died There were two more drinks that he'd like to try The conductor said what could they be A hot cup of coffee and a cold glass of tea Always gets me. In his last moments, the only thing he wanted was the most basic reminders of life. Love this song. |
