At first glance, this just seems to be an "independence" anthem, emphasizing that the success of this person was self-made through struggle and dedication - a theme repeated throughout the chorus: "It's just me myself and I...Oh I don't need a hand to hold" and "I don't need anything to get me through the night...'Cause the music fills me good and it gets me every time". He's proud of his accomplishments, and rightly so, because he had little-to-no help on his journey. However, the subject reveals his inner struggle in the verses - "I just need to be alone, I just need to be at home" and "Yeah, and I don't like talking to strangers / So get the fuck off me I'm anxious", among others. The subject, having been preoccupied with his own success for so long, finds he can't connect with new people anymore. The subject has been SO focused on his own success and proving himself to the world that he can do it alone. Now that he's "arrived", so to speak, he finds himself unable or unwilling to trust other people, choosing instead to accumulate material wealth. The subject acknowledges this though; it may be a lifestyle of his own choosing, and perhaps this is what makes him happy after all...or that's just what he's telling himself. TL;DR Life is a zero-sum game, and even success comes at a cost. |
