Is this song about the Tenboom sisters? Novella was released a year or so after the Hiding Place movie, and the lyrics seem to correspond to their plight. Please advise. Thanks |

From what I have read, this song is about a woman who gets a back alley abortion, and the lyrics describe the resulting guilt and shame she feels. There appear to be some missing lyrics, i.e. "All my sorrow, all my mourning". |

I see that there are several interpretations here, and perhaps we will never know precisely what Parks and Wilson intended, and I like it that way. I do not have an interpretation of my own, but I can share my reaction to the song.
Whenever I hear the song, I think of James Joyce's "The Dead". I sincerely doubt that that's what Parks and Wilson had in mind, but that doesn't bother me. Both seem to involve a dinner gathering and accompanying musical performance. In both cases, there seems to be a lot going on underneath the surface.
Even if Brian Wilson were to respond this comment and call me an idiot, I wouldn't care. I will continue to enjoy this song the way I want to. |
