It's a song to their fans. It's talking about the punk phase. There was a huge surge of punk music roughly a decade ago. A lot of those bands fell from the charts and people started to wonder if punk was dead. All Time Low along with quite a few big time punk bands continued to make music and continued to tour. Now that punk is starting to pick up steam and become more popular, they're seeing all these young kids get signed and it's irritating to be pigeonholed with these new bands. When being young starts getting old A new pace saves face or so I’m told - They don't want to be seen as the same as all these young new punk bands that are popping up. If you listen to their music you can see a drastic change in the sound. They stayed true to who they are but they also wanted to show everyone what they're made of and what sets them apart. Be the new kid, on an old block A chalk outline on a playground blacktop - They've done this all before but they're being treated like they're new to this. The chorus is saying 'It doesn't matter what anyone says about us. We're alive! Let's enjoy this!' I think it was intended to break up the negative feelings in the song. The band is notorious for keeping things light hearted even when they're touching on something deep. A flicker of a soul casting silhouettes On the face of a town that could not get me to stay - It's a flicker of a soul because they were losing steam. They were dealing with record label nightmares for awhile and they were getting some bad press. I believe, despite the fanbase they had here, they went and toured over seas. And when the spark’s gone, former lovers just looking for a bus to throw me under - I'm pretty sure this line is to the fair-weather fans, the people who didn't stick by them in the tough times. I read a few articles about how they were 'trying to hard' or just 'didn't quite have it' 'they're no fall out boy'. |
