Let me preface this with "I'm not that lyrically inclined, so take my interpretation with a grain of salt" First I read 1984, then I heard this song a year or two later, then I re-read 1984, and by the next time I listened to this song, I was pretty sure it was about the Two Minutes Hate. In the book, Winston goes into detail about everyone's unique individual performance during the ceremony, particularly this quote: "A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge-hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current, turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing, screaming lunatic." In an ideal world, if this song is really about the two minutes hate, there'd be some concrete two minute span in the song that would correlate to the actual TMH from start to finish, regardless of the time it takes Winston to pack up and get himself into the auditorium. This is as close as I found in the song: 4:11 - "The next moment a hideous, grinding speech, as of some monstrous machine running without oil, burst from the big telescreen at the end of the room. It was a noise that set one’s teeth on edge and bristled the hair at the back of one’s neck. The Hate had started" 6:10 - the song ends |

| The song never really made sense to me (but I loved it) until I went back and re-read 1984 and then happened across this song again. I could be wrong (I'm not the most lyrically inclined), but the this song conjures up the imagery of the Two Minutes Hate for me, especially the intensity and ironic unison of all the different pieces as the hate builds up and climaxes, followed by the finale of gentle music (just like the movie) | |

| It's about a few things, from what I gather. Judging by the title of the song, some of the lyrics, and the "sound effect" starting at 2:45, the underlying theme is fapping. The lyrics decorate the action with motivation: pleasure, frustration, and loneliness. | |
