I've been up all night trying to figure out what this song means. My conclusion of the night, is that the "one thing," is the view that all existence isone thing and not separate things. "In a cage where only one thing could be free and it's not you and I" The one thing that can be free, is the cage itself, and not the things within the cage. I think the cage refers to all of existence. Thus we are all in a cage. All of existence is the "one thing." All things are one thing. All of existence is a cage. Therefore we cannot be free until death. "Another decade getting high until you're free." Assuming that "20 years asleep" is referring to the average lifespan (60 years) and average nights sleep (8 years), then a "decade" averages out to 6 hours a day. If one sleeps for 8 hours a day with 8 hours of work, that leaves 8 hours. 1 hour accounts for getting ready for work, another hour getting ready for bed. I think the decade (6 hours a day) represents the free time we have trying to forget the reality of our "cage". The fact that we live in a cage. "There is nothing after that but you and I" After death there is no longer a cage. You and I become one thing, become one existence. To live is to try to forget you're in a cage. To die is to become the cage. The cage (all of existence) is free because it is surrounded by nothing. To die is to be free is to be surrounded by nothing. "Let's Roll" refers to Todd Beamer on Flight 93 who said this before helping to take out the terrorists to prevent them from crashing into the White House. His acting of setting himself on fire with nothing to burn was an act of self-sacrifice out of love for his country and fellow citizens. His actions are an act of love, his death a metaphor for death. For in death, there is only one thing. There is no boundary between you or I, and is that not the meaning of love? That there is no difference between you and I? The only way to be free while in existence (the cage) is to realize that all things are one. The true meaning of love. That there is no difference between one thing and another thing. Love is the only way to be free. It is not necessary to wait until death. |
