I feel that this is a eulogy for a lover or soulmate. "I built my house beside the wood so I could hear your singing". He went out of his way to be close with this person. The holly, much like the evergreen, as mentioned by Megan121, is a symbol of eternity. "Tho you are singing somewhere still, I can no longer hear you" reminds me of all of those funerals for singers/musicians I have gone to, where the pastor says "Now they're singing in Heaven's choir." |

I wrote an essay on this years ago (got a 110 on it too!!). I wandered all around whether it was the death of a lover, a lover leaving, death of a child ("Even though she sleeps upon your satin", as in satin lined coffin), a child leaving home, etc. After toiling through all of the possibilities, I came to the realization that those details are all irrelevant. The purpose of the song is acceptance. "Go firmly to the window, drink it in." "Say Goodbye". Quit making excuses, rationalizations, looking for explanations, denials, etc. Alexandra is gone. Accept it. |

| @[kathy10154:17393] I agree. When I heard this, my first thought was "I am listening to Leonard Cohen's last album." The entire album seems to be "getting his house in order". It is a collection of fair-well speeches. "Here I am, I'm ready, my Lord", "I'm Traveling Light", "I'm leaving the Table". I re-listen to this album about once a week, still gives me chills. | |
