Sufjan Stevens – The Only Thing Lyrics 8 years ago
The tear my eyes out/tear my heart out thing is definitely a reference to the song "today" by the smashing pumpkins.

The Church – Under The Milky Way Lyrics 8 years ago
To me this song has always been about reflecting on how alone we all truely are in life. At night everyone seems to fade away, its just you and the vast endless space around you. Its also about just how incredibly small we are campared to the enormity of the universe. The "loveless facination" might be peoples desire for some kind of existential meaning to all of life. This song could mean alot of things. It brings about such a surreal feeling when I listen to it, which is why I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

Eels – Not Ready Yet Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree with what a lot of people are saying here, but I don't think this is about E's sister. I think this song is describing what E was feeling in the wake of his sisters death, and all the other shit that was going on in his life. He had so many aweful things happen to him in such a short time, that he just wanted to hide inside his house until he started to feel better, despite everyone telling him that he needs to get out and cheer up. The tone of this song perfectly conveys the feeling of isolation and lonliness. Unfortunately I'm going through the same problem right now, but it's made me think about this song a lot lately. I just love bands that have the courage to talk about the darker aspects of life, it's good to know that you're not the only one going through this stuff(:

Eels – That Look You Give That Guy Lyrics 9 years ago
First verse:

To me this song is about someone who really wants to be in an intimate relationship, but feels as though they never will be. He feels jealous when he sees a guy with his girlfriend/wife and the just look so happy together. He watches as the girl looks at her boyfriend in admiration, completely in love with him. Then he notices how the guy looks very pround, taking for granted the fact that he has a girl that loves him so much. I don't think he is talking about a specific girl, like his ex-girlfriend, rather he is just jealous of couples in general.

I like how he opens the song by saying "I never thought I'd say these thoughts aloud." This part is just so accurate. Most people would never say that they are unable to get in a relationship because they are afraid that people will think less of them. So instead, they keep their jealous thoughts to themselves and pretend that they don't mind not being in a relationship, when really they likely have very low self esteem and are depressed because of it.

Chorus:

It hurts him whenever he sees a girl give "that look" to her lover, and he wishes that he had a girl of his own that would look at him like that. He fantasizes about being that guy for a moment, and walking in his shoes. If he only had the chance to be "that guy" instead if himself( he is likely an outcast/loser, and is incapable of getting a girlfriend due to social awkwardness or physical appearance) then he would never take her for granted, and treat her like a queen.

I could go through this entire song but I think I'm just gonna end it here. In my opinion, this song perfectly captures that depressing feeling you get when you are lonely and long for companionship, yet it all just feels so far away.

Eels – My Beloved Monster Lyrics 9 years ago
I'm suprised that everyone on here seems to think that this song is about a dog. Despite being such a happy tune, I have always believed this song to describe something really sad. I think this song was written about E's sister, who suffered from schizophrenia and depression. She started to accept her illness and live happily for while, but then her "beloved monster" destoryed her, ultimately motivating her to commit suicide.
