"Said the angel to the Queen I lift my skirt when Voltaire turns As he speaks, his mouth full of garlic White, yes, white Misfortune of us two He told you to be free And you obeyed We have to decide what is important" Voltaire advocated for freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and a secular government so I think what they are saying here is that once they do not have a preset value system to follow such as religion, that they have to create meaning for themselves which is way harder than you would think. "A war we never see Or a street so black that babies die?" a war we never see I assume is heaven and hell and a street so black babies die I think is referring to the bleakness of the world without religion. "A system and a theory Or our wish to be free?" is freedom worth giving up having a system for? "To organise and analyse And at the end realise That nobody knows If it really happened" even if we analyze everything a lot, we will never come to any definite conclusions about life |

this is one of my favorite songs. super hard to interpret the lyrics but here are a few thoughts on them "And the guess I get it And the gate I get it And the game I get it" I understand life "A wonderful wooden reason To stand in line keep in line" people live in a mechanical way "You lose your hand To understand The accident is red" something really bad needs to happen to you before you understand that this is a serious problem. "And the money you look up And the madame you look up" your actions are primarily determined by money and women |

I hadn't thought about the meaning of this song much until charbin said that yourself is steam means your self esteem. I could be wrong in this, but this is the way I interpret it: "Bombed out lovers, gallant red flocks of mellow seducers, fine [find?] eager seekers" here he is talking about well adjusted people in relationships "it's not as easy as it may seem, remember that yourself is steam" it doesn't come naturally "Their pretty shells are so inviting, well protected Their eyes are rivers, they give me shivers" it is easy to hide inside yourself like a turtle. close yourself off "it's not time for the real life [live?] sign, it's not time for these fears of mine" while closed off from everyone you convince yourself that this isn't your real life yet. That eventually you will come out of your shell and have experiences and live your life. "I'm feeling troubled, I'm feeling trapped, can't shake that bubble off my back" once you get used to being closed off it becomes very hard to leave the comfort of your shell and live like a normal person. "I feel no harm, I feel no harm, ...feel no harm" closed off you are safe from rejection, ridicule, etc. "what once was lost will never be found, keep spinning in circles until you break new ground" now you are stuck in this situation doomed to come to a bunch of epiphanies about why your life isn't that great, but never really change anything major. |
