The lyrics and melody are very nuanced. The song starts out with the first person narrator seemingly referring to a hurt, tortured soul in a second person. As the song progresses, the first person demonstrates an overwhelming knowledge of the second person. How does the first person know so much about the second person if indeed the second person shelters their feelings so well? By the end of the song, the listener is left wondering which person is suffering the most. Brilliant lyrics and the change in tempo and melody match perfectly with the change in intensity of the emerging emotions. The song and lyrics can elicit tears quickly regardless of whether or not you see yourself in the lyrics.
