My interpretation is that the song's narrator is a soldier or a mercenary who is now forced to escape (either from some material threat or from his past actions), with his past haunting him. The ghosts of those he's killed now follow and torment him. "Tonight I'll see the line of thousand ghosts Those once were alive behind my eyes" He has witnessed the death of many (it is unclear if he himself has killed them or he has just been a witness) and the memory haunts him. "Into the foreign lands there shall I go But I know they're after me and it is my time to bleed" He's escaping but he knows that he's going to suffer. "They" might refer to his thoughts or may refer to some actual people who are after him (which makes sense if he's been a mercenary). "Those restless dreams keep on teasing I can see your eyes just before you died" This one seems to me to either describe the mental pain he's gone through after killing someone in a close encounter (having been able to see the victim's eyes) or after seeing a friend die in his arms. "Dead man's shadow Wavering above me Dead man's shadow Restless soul haunting me" This part is more in line with the interpretation that he has killed someone. |
