Paul Simon – Darling Lorraine Lyrics 6 years ago
@[SteveP:29451] I thought perhaps that 3rd person section was either a dream sequence or a way of showing time passed.

R.E.M. – Leaving New York Lyrics 9 years ago
I agree with other posters that this song is about someone who left New York as a way of leaving romance, but my perspective is that the singer wanted something outside of the relationship (possibly a musical career) & that he felt staying in New York with the woman would have ultimately persuaded him to make compromises about his ambitions. If you think about "you might've succeeded in changing me; I might've been turned around," that's not a lyric where he's thinking she would have broken off with him so he did it first -- it's suggests that he was so in love with her he feared he might have lost something more precious to him than their relationship if he'd stayed. He values the relationship (thus the lines about loving her forever & still feeling lonely), but there was something about himself that he did not want to change.
