James Bay – Hold Back The River Lyrics 6 years ago
When hearing the songs and lyrics (see right) to “Hold Back the Rivers” by James Bay there is deep meaning within the words of this song.
Our life is made up of life encounters where we can develop friendships and relationships, but lives branch out away from what we originally had in early years. We grow apart. We want to hang out and have expectations for that. However, we must acknowledge that we will be lonely without to bring us memories and long-lasting dealings with each other. We must gain that inner happiness that we can use when we are lonely. His chorus "...Lonely water, lonely water won't you let us wander Let us hold each other Can stop for a minute and be by your side Let us hold each other..." (Bay, 2019) We can ask others like ex’s, friends, lovers, our relationships to "be by your side" "let us hold each other" can we have that!! I do not think we can have this all the time and we will be lonely from time to time or categorized with the words in the song “...lonely water…” This means more to me than just lonely -- this is massive loneliness as water to me encompasses being surrounded everywhere in our lives with loneliness. Then keep in mind that his chorus "...Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes Hold back the river so I Can stop for a minute and be by your side…” (Bay, 2019)
Hold back the river, hold back" (Bay, 2019) does not mean literally except hold back the river. To me, the meaning is that we get depressed about our lives and we begin to cry because we have no one as we are used to growing with those childhood relationships. I am guilty of this so the words" hold back that river (of cries...") and the words "be by your side" "let us hold each other" contrary to what I said above may be asking for a memory. As easily recognizable in the words "Once upon a different life We rode our bikes into the sky.
But now we crawl against the tide Those distant days are flashing by". To me this is more than just a memory - this is what we wanted to be, what we dream of being, our childhood, our life. We thought and discussed this with friends as we rode our bikes in the sky--this is not literal--this is what we wanted in our lives like the house with the white picket fence, an extraordinary life and our dreams. "...and now we crawl against the tide..." (Bay, 2019) We are out in the open waters in our lives and want to come back home but make it to the tide and keep going back and forth. For me, I cry as I never had that house with a white picket fence, I had a productive career with 3 jobs but then lost all of that and now I am older person who is in the same age bracket as many who have died recently in their 50's. What happen if I do not reconnect with my friends from over the years and leave this whole life with nothing to show for in my life. My successful years of 12 years at a dream jobs is LOST, my past success of having love for my family is useless. I cannot show love to my dead parents or my sister who has chosen to never to speak to me again. Every time I hear this song those feelings, memories come back to me. My childhood friends played kick ball in my back yard, slid down the back of houses on Elizabeth street when in this period of time, all my parents rang the bell when dinner was ready - we actually ate together (what happen to this in later generations) went camping with my parents and I invited my friends on the camping trips, walked to my Elm Grove Elementary, I remember my first grade teacher - Mrs. Fisher. I remember raising pugs and we had 13 at one time while have a couple litter of puppies. I remember placing the puppies in my TONKA TRUCK and pushing down that big hill on Elizabeth drive. The puppies flew on that NEW TONKA TRUCK PLAN in my back porch with picnic benches as the platform and runway to everywhere and beyond. After those 11 years and moving to FL then to VA all this was lost in my life!!!
So "we rode my bikes into the sky" (Bay, 2019) is memories to me and the words add to the memories we had as children as this give you a feeling that those dreams and expectations for our life was monumental and I wanted future dreams to come true more than anything in the world while enjoying a carefree life with no responsibility that I would never ever experience again!!

. Tried to keep you close to me
But life got in between
Tried to square not being there
But it's there that I should've been

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river
So I can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

Once upon a different life
We rode our bikes into the sky
But now we're caught against the tide
Those distant days all flashing by

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river
So I can stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river
So I can stop for a minute and see where you hide
Hold back the river, hold back

Oh, oho, oho, oho, oho
Oho, oho, oho, oho

Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander?
Let us hold each other?
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander?
Let us hold each other?

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river
So I can stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river, hold back

Hold back the river, let me look in your eyes
Hold back the river
So I can stop for a minute and be by your side
Hold back the river…
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander?
Let us hold each other?
Lonely water, lonely water
Won't you let us wander?
Let us hold each other?
(Bay, 2019)

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics 6 years ago
The lyrics and words in the song “Chasing cars” by “Snow Patrol”, has shown me that I have been unable to properly live my life as I should without hearing some praise, love, or some sort of validation. In recent years, I have been singing Karaoke and I especially love if someone comes to sing with me or listen to me. I love the clapping at the end after singing a song. I love this former colleague of mine who is calling often to ask me to go out with them. I have found without this motivation from others, I will isolate as I have a low self-esteem and have developed awkward feeling about myself. In a relationship we get to the point where everything is just the routine of it all in saying I love you. Sometimes I do want more than just this routine from others that many of us have gotten into. I must admit that I am co-dependent, and I need others and their validation to feel good about myself. I fail to build my own self-esteem and that self-validation I need. I must realize that I am worthy and say to myself and others that portray confidence. Whether I am co-dependent or not, I do agree with the lyrics when Gary Lightfoot says “…I don't quite know How to say How I feel…Those three words Are said too much they're not enough…” (Lightbody, Snow Patrol Lyrics, 2019) Regardless if I have a relationship with someone who is ever present every day of my life or relationship on hold from a distance, the words in this song still mean so much to me as our life is more then just words of validation of “I love you”.
What means so much to me about Music is that there are some of the greatest Song Writers out among us where their words strike accord in our lives when listening to music, they have written lyrics for. I am moved when I hear the words and lyrics of music and I love to understand the meaning and how this can change my life.
Gary Lightbody “…wrote this in the garden of producer Garret "Jacknive" Lee's cottage one night in "a blur of red wine and Percocet." He says he wrote about 10 songs that night…the next day nine of them were terrible, but "Chasing Cars" stood out like "a diamond in the s--t…." (Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, 2019)
Gary Lightfoot also has said, It's the purest love song that I've ever written…” (Lightbody, what does chasing cars mean, 2018)
Have you ever seen a dog that has chased a car reach the car? If you have, what would the dog do? I do not know do you. Well that what this title is all about. I know I have attempted to get someone to do something or change something like the three words "I love you..." I do not ask them this, but I am thinking can you go beyond the routine and tell me what you love about me. Is the “love me” from others just a routine or lip service, could it be for another reason that say those three words all the time. This is not always the case. I do love this person more than the world will know and what I love is after meeting them they were there as a friend or significant others for many years. My feeling is that deep down inside my significant other has inner kindness and love that will be there for me. (Hartzog, 2016)
Another perspective is that it is about a person who is flawed that has been taken into a relationship. My co-dependency that I am writing about in an autobiography can be a flaw and I relate to the words that I do want more because I do want more as I thrive for validation. What is wrong with that? Why can we not want more? I believe it becomes a flaw if your life is all about others and not taking of you and this is the wrong balance of co-dependency in your life. (Joanna, 2016)

Of course, my favorite feedback from the songwriter and musician Gary Lightfoot states “..The song is about dreaming of a life you can’t have, but enjoying the dream anyway…” (Lightbody, what does chasing cars mean, 2018). I relate as even though those three words may not actually be sincere, I hope and dream that this relationship is real, but this is always an intricate component that I can hope for.
I get emotional over the words “before we get old” as this seem to indicate that we need treasure our early years before we lose the opportunity to enjoy the best years of my life. The sad part is I qualify has been old and do not have that youthful look that lovers desire. Before we get old, I am old, and these words take me to an author that had a book made into a movie:: ““...We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster, that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty and have less to offer each time we start with someone new…” (Aciman, 2019)
With all this being said I choose to believe that we want so much out of our life as we want others to love and validate us and this can sometimes be like a dog chasing a car as we never know if we will get everything we want; however, we can be sure that we can count on our ourselves to learn to portray self-confidence and move beyond wanting validation and those three words “I love you” as with the lyrics. The validation we receive is better than expectations of not having anyone at all or the hope of validation from someone that never becomes evident in our lives,.
