The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of The Understatement Lyrics 7 years ago
it's about beung seduced by a prostitute or stripper as someone else has already said. Also it's not 'twenty little tragedies' it's 'sweaty little tragedies'. AT is very literary and this is a very common metaphor used by poets like Larkin to allude to lustful, shameful, animal sex.

Declan Mckenna – Humongous Lyrics 7 years ago
In my mind it's about the conflicting perspectives of the mind. He is in inner turmoil. There are two things going on here. One is (i think it's with himself) conversation with himself. he tells himself that he is 'a joke' 'talking loud'. Hes painfully self aware trying to escape the voice that tells him he does not fit in to society. The chorus is the best part 'Im big humungous enormous and small'. This is the paradox of living and shows the extent to his awareness. everybody is huge in their own head, important and enormous. to the individual his own affairs consume everything he does. however, in the grand scheme of things he is insignificant tiny and nobody cares about him even if he feels enormoud as if he is the only one alive in his head

Young the Giant – Amerika Lyrics 8 years ago
well it's about the pursuit of the american dream, achieving that dream and realising how empty and lonely money and success really is 'that rich kid pain what it is to be alone'. It's a really fantastic song and deals with so many themes. It is also a critic of materialism and capitalist ideals how money even allows u to 'own' friends. In the end he says 'I am mad because I don't know what you used me for'. I think this is him shouting out at society saying why did you tell me that i should seek 'glory' when all i would find is loneliness. That is how society uses you putting empty ideals in your head. I also think he's talking to his child who's about to make the same mistakes as him as at the end he says 'same old story oh you want glory son'. if anyone knows why he's spelt america with a k please say.

Florence + the Machine – Dog Days Are Over Lyrics 8 years ago
This is a very different take on this song but i think it's about the passing off youth and having to let go of ideals and facing the brutal reality of life and careers. The dog days are the hottest days of summer not a madness as suggested in other comments. They are not bad but good. They symbolises youth, the hottest days of your life. Then when it says run fast for your mother and so on it means you have to grow up and let go of love and all the dreams of youth and instead work and succeed in order to 'survive' and support the ones you love. this is just another take on it!

Cage the Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams Lyrics 9 years ago
@[edalobo:17902] The line "soft speak with a mean streak nearly brought me to my knees" isn't about a fight they had he's describing how she's so sweet 'soft speak' but has this ability to hurt him 'with a mean streak' and how this combination of things nearly made him marry her 'nearly brought me to my knees' is referring to getting down onto your knees and proposing.

Arcade Fire – Ready to Start Lyrics 9 years ago
So to me this song has two meanings. The first one is that this guy is singing this to an ex girlfriend basically telling her that he's finally got over her and saying 'If I was scared I would And if I was pure You know I would And if I was yours' meaning that if he was all these things then he would still be friends with her but he realises at the end that he's none of these things and he no longer wants to be in her 'shaddow' therefore he's ready to start again in a way. It basically perfectly expresses that moment of triumph but sadness when you finally feel like you've got over somebody.

The second meaning and I think the one which is more likely is him talking to society saying that he doesnt fit in ('and if i was yours but i'm not') and that he's done pretending that western society and what it brainwashes us into doing isn't for him. How even though everyone knows that society is so faulted and wrong people would rather follow it cos it's 'better than being alone' and at the end he finally steps 'out into the dark' abandoning society and he's finally free.
