I think it is sort of like "there are no atheists in foxholes" and it is essential to remember the era of its setting. The industrialised age of science holds so much promise and hope and optimism, however, when you are at sea, surrounded by vast water, alone, and scared, it can hold less appeal and instill less confidence.
