Simon and Garfunkel – Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall Lyrics 7 years ago
I love this song, though I know it from Davy Graham.

"I don't know what is real
I can't touch what I feel
And I hide behind the shield of my illusion"

To me, this hits home hard with being bipolar and having depersonalization along with it. To some people, these lines are literal. I overthink everything, and constantly have thoughts that the things around me aren't real, especially people. The only things I feel and know for certain can't be physical. The illusion is what we decide we think the world is, and our defense mechanisms/misconceptions.

The mirror on my wall part is also similar, because sometimes i stare at my reflection and feel like it isn't my own. The allegory of the cave reference is clever and related further to existential crisis.

The song gives really the only solution for these problems

"My fantasy becomes reality, and I must be what I can be and face tomorrow"

My idea of the world is all I have, I may as well make it a positive idea. I don't even know if anything exists, but I am here right now and need to just be what i can be.

Imo this is the basic message of enlightenment. As the mad Persian poet said, "Wherever you go, there you are"

Oingo Boingo – On The Outside Lyrics 7 years ago
@[ofnothing:26971] May have been 4 years ago, but you're wrong. Those people oftentimes aren't happy, you just don't see that. Happiness comes from within and must be chosen. I think other people don't even recognize their unhappiness or honestly even that they are conscious.

I hope you are in a different mindset now. 4 years ago I felt the same way.

Oingo Boingo – Perfect System Lyrics 7 years ago
I agree with the posters below, however Perfect System and Controller make me absolutely certain that Elfman read the book We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. The whole premise of the book is described perfectly by these two songs. A perfect system where people are shadowed by thought police and ultimately everyone has their "imagination excised" in a large scale operation. I posted this same response on Controller bc I want more people to hear of this book, which was Orwell's biggest inspiration for 1984 and imo much more relevant as a warning and more engaging as a fictional book.
