This song reminds me to the first notes in In Bloom, Marigold could be the "Beatles" version. About the meaning, when I first listened this song I thought this was about Kurt's last days jealousy towards Dave, because of the money and fame Dave was earning because of him and also, Kurt was afraid to be betrayed by Dave. But now, having listened to some interviews, I think this song talks about a love/hate triangle, where "Marigold" could be Courtney, "he" is Kurt, and the "slow clock" could mean patience, to miss someone or waiting to make a "I-want-it-all" decision that scares "him". Facts that make me think so: 1. Apparently, Kurt smiled when Dave first played the song. So it didn't sound like a passive aggressive cynical lyric against him. 2. Kurt kissed Dave while playing/recording the song. I didn't know they were such affective with each other! 3. Kurt and Dave shared bedroom while on tour, so I guess they shared the most intimate secrets, they both dated one Bikini Hill member, they were like partners in crime and they also shared that sensitive personality, they treated each other with too much sweetness to be two badass, strong and young grunge-stars. Anyway, 6 color pictures of a marigold could just be Courtney pictures Kurt carried with him. 4. According to Courtney, Dave and her used to like each other when she was just a Billy Corgan groupie and before she started dating Kurt. Dave rejected / joked with Courtney telling her things like she had a round face and she had a terrible hairstyle. Courtney still thinks Dave was cute. 5. Dave was the only Nirvana member at Kurt and Courtney wedding, and there's that weird wedding picture with Courtney, Dave and Kurt, all holding hands like if it were a threesome wedding. 6. Dave's constant "paternal" attention to Kurt's daughter, unlike Krist. And few years ago, Courtney falsely accused Grohl of having an affair with adult Frances, which sounded like an attempt to get his attention after 20 years… or like jealousy of the relationship that the adult Frances was cultivating with Dave. In fact she (Courtney) managed to avoid the meeting between Dave and her daughter at the 2014 Rock and Roll hall of Fame. Something must have happened between Dave and Courtney, beyond money. 7. And the definitive evidence: This song was released as a B-side for Heart-Shaped Box, the song talking about Courtney and the love box she gifted him. Marigold could be Dave's perspective of that romance he lived "in the middle" with interests and feelings mixed towards Kurt and Courtney. |

In my opinion these lyrics clearly reflect his narcisist, self-indulgent, hedonistic and lazy side when living with his then girlfriend Tracy Marander. It was a dysfunctional relationship and they used to argue, as Tracy spent all day working hard at job earning money for both, while Kurt, conveniently let her take care of him and spent all day at her home doing what he liked most: music, art, watching tv. All the sentences are descriptives of this situation, or could be his answers and excuses he could have used to uphold his point of view when arguing/negotiating with her, trying to keep his own rules for her to stay with him (Kurt was once her crush, and he took profit of this). By the way, "to fly someone's plane" means "when someone controls their partner and make them do anything". In this case, the plane was Kurt's, of course. "I'm on a plane, I can't complain". "I'll start this off Without any words I got so high that I scratched 'til I bled" This refers to his "all-day-long" guitar sessions, playing, recording, without even singing, just looking for the melody, scratching the guitar strings until his fingers were bleeding. "Love myself Better than you I know it's wrong So what should I do?" Literally saying Tracy that he is more self-indulgent than her, he looks for his happiness, his personal fulfillment, success, he can't help it, and if she doesn't agree with his passion, what should he do ("sleep in the car?"- as it's known Kurt once said to her) "The finest day That I ever had Was when I learned To cry on command" Typical emotional blackmail in relationships, in order to counteract her complaints, get profit of her goodwill and keep living in her house for free. "My mother died Every night It's safe to say Don't quote me on that" It seems an easy lie or false excuse to tell her for letting him go out alone every night "my mom is dying, she is in the hospital, I have to spend the night with her", however, he used to hang out with friends and other girls. "The black sheep got Blackmailed again Forgot to put On the zip code" Kurt is the black sheep and he is blackmailed again to kick him out of the house, because he didn't told her where did he spent the night, (the location, zip code). Or maybe, "forgot to put on the zip code", also means that the black-mail doesn't arrive to it's addressee (Kurt), because he doesn't give a shit. "Somewhere I have heard this before In a dream my memory has stored As defense I'm neutered and spayed What the hell am I trying to say?" He's used to this situation, that's his whole life's story, where nobody wants him in their house, where he has to obey orders for convenience, but internally he doesn't give a fuck, he is waterproofed. "It is now time To make it unclear To write off lines That don't make a sense" That seems the narcissist's typical gaslighting when he needs to manipulate the situation at his convenience, confusing her, so that she ends up questioning her own truth, her feelings, her senses, her own mental health, thinking that she misunderstood the signs, she is the one who is wrong, but it's just him consciously blurring it all, erasing evidences, coward to face reality, getting off the steps that could lead him to a non-return place. "I'm on a plain I can't complain" She's "flying my plain", I make the rules, I just do what I like to do, I drive the plane, I can't complain. |

| Nirvana – Do Re Mi Lyrics | 8 years ago |

Kurt's voice in this song (home recording) sounds as if Kurt were crying or at least as if he had a cold, with stuffy nose… you know what I mean. Even in the high notes his voice seems on the point of tears. This one was his last song, maybe he was already 27 and he knew he wanted to die at 27 as Jimmy Hendrix. He could have spent his last lucid moments thinking about what would happen to his dead body, as he used to fantasize about working at a cremation factory and heard many weird stories. That "Do Re Mi" not only sounds as "don't rape me", but also sounds as "don't cremate me" (both, seem to refer to the moment when he dies). Since the first time I heard this song, I had this creepy feeling. On one side it seems a serene and innocent song, but on the other, it really seems to be a sung instruction manual about his mortal remains, a musical suicide note, a sung picture of the moment someone finds his body and what must happen next... It's scary but lyrics make sense this way. I can't hear this song without shivering. |

I clearly see that guilt, shame and humiliation Kurt talked constantly about, reflected in these lyrics: He hated being mainstream, mainly because the hate/disrespect he received from the punk-rock purists, and the anger of having such "illiterate" fans who may like Nirvana, but didn't share any other punk values. Too trivial for him, he felt like a supermarket product, and his songs were his sons, "sell the kids for food", "we can have some more". The "nature is a whore" he referred to the musical industry and all that corporate magazines that "bruised" him and pushed him to democratize, clean and hide the noise and anger of the grunge, so he was afraid to become a nice, polite and inexpressive talking face, which is contrary to grunge and the way he felt. The music video is pretty graphic and literal. The chorus may be a criticism towards Nirvana fans, or the typical things he had to hear from haters and purist punk-rockers that labeled him as mainstream and a rock 'n' roll wannabe. And finally the references to the "tender age in bloom, reproductive, etc", reflects his state of creative inspiration, writing and composing non-stop while earning so much money and fame. |

| I know the sexual connotations are obvious, but unlike many people, I don't think the lyrics are about Tobi as they barely went out nor really knew each other. The lyrics are not sad nor bitter (*look for Lounge Act lyrics to Tobi Vail), they are not about platonic nor frustrated love, but about admiration, gratitude, sex, tender friendship ("I like you", instead of "I love you") towards the girlfriend/housemate he considers his life teacher, who taught and gave him everything, so he feels like "it is now my duty to…" he has to reward her. | |

Two hypothetical theories to explain the meaning: 1- It could be about a first gay-sex experience (re-read the lyrics thinking about it). It doesn't mean it happened to him, just to broach the subject in his work, although he had a gay-best friend in high school... 2- Or maybe about his "convenience" 3-4 year relationship with Tracy Marander as well, including his economic dependence upon her (parasitic relationship). He had already written the song "About a girl" inspired by her, and may not be the only one. Kurt wrote many letters to friends bragging about how hard his girlfriend worked and the money she was making on her own, while he was a spoiled bum. Besides that nurture and emotional security he needed in order to write, compose, sing, and do his art, she never oppressed nor bossed him ("without a poison apple"…remember the Snow White's witch?!) Tracy was so sweet with him, unlike the rest of the women/witches he found before and after; Kurt always complained about the "overbearing dominating" Kris Novoselic's girlfriend, then there's that "retarded girl" who accused him of taking advantage of her, Tobi Vail rejected him and Courtney used to psicologically mistreat him. However, Kurt and Tracy were so tolerant with each other ("i don't care what you think unless it is about me") and at that time he felt so lucky to have her, that he felt "indebted" and paid her with good sex ("my meat for you… back and forth… I travel through a tube… vaccum out the fluids…") |
