| @[daviddavidson420:19475] with that in mind, this song could reference Syd. "The paper holding their folded faces to the floor" would mean that the LSD addiction made him really go insane | |

The top definitions mostly align with my views, but I feel it goes deeper. "The lunatic is on the grass The lunatic is on the grass Remembering games and Daisy chains and laughs Got to keep the loonies on the path" As with many songs on the two concept albums, the lyrics are not literal. This stanza is from the POV of "normal" society. The 'path' is daily life in society. As the song "money" proved, the society here is capitalism. Rather then staying on the hard path of modern Life, B.D. people go their own way. Rather than focus on work, they want to make the most out of life. Of course, such a way to live is not crazy, but to a normal person, this outlier here gets labelled as a "lunatic". "The Lunatic is in the hall The lunatic is in my hall The paper holds their folded faces to the floor And everyday the paper boy brings more" Such "lunatics" are stereotyped as terrible people, when most simply wish to enjoy their precious life, which DSoTM tells you to do. This stereotype creates an artificial disdain for such groups of people. This disdain brings back the "us and them" mentality. Pretty much: "Pink DARES walk his retarded ass in MY hallway?!" Rather than accepting different ways of life and ideas, we silence them by separating deviants apart from us. Living in Asylums, 'special' classes, etc. "And if the dam breaks open many years too soon And if there is no room upon the hill And if your head explodes with dark forbodings too I'll see you on the dark side of the moon" The last line appears again. I will get to it when we get there, though. Every other line, I believe says "if something terrible happens to you". This POV is Waters himself. At the end of the song, someone says there is no dark side of the moon. If you can see someone somewhere that doesn't exist, you can't see them. In other words, you will never meet the outliers of society. No matter what happens, you can't see them. Alternatively, if there was a dark side if the moon, how would you get there to see the lunatic? You won't, because he is blocked by society. "The Lunatic is in my head The lunatic is in my head You raise the blade, you make the change You rearrange me until I'm sane." This is a first person POV, and one of the songs most profound moments. Here, a lobotomy is clearly described. "The lunatic is in my head" means that the thing that keeps the lunatic from being normal is the head, or brain. "You raise the blade" a surgeon scalpel. "You make the change" altering his brain to make him/her conform to societies norms. "You rearrange me until I'm sane" the doctor is messing with his thoughts, rearranging them, until it is deemed 'sane'. "You lock the door And throw away the key There is someone in my head But it isn't me" "You lock the door and throw away the key" Locking someone in an insane asylum forever. "There is someone in my head, but it isn't me." Mainly self explanatory. The "someone" is the unusual condition causing the person to think this certain way. "And if the cloud bursts thunder in your ear You shout and no one seems to hear And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes I'll see you on the dark side of the moon" Another POV from Rogers talking about the non-existent "dark side of the moon". Rather than tradgedy, this is on emotional detachment from the world. Such detachment would obviously happen with the deplorable ways we "treat" anyone different from us. The line about your band playing different tunes is a direct reference to Syd Barrett, who got REAL brain damage from Drug addiction See, mental illnesses are very real, but we are so quick to judge to the point where 99% of "disabled" people are nice, friendly, respectful people. The other 1% are the ones who's emotions are effected so heavily that they could kill people without thinking about it. Although this is not their fault, they should be followed in large groups of people for insurance. however, they deserve a chance at their one life. And that is really what the whole album means to me. Thank you, Waters, Gilmour, Syd, and all the others |

I feel this song is about the Middle Ages going into the Renaissance with the Catholic indulgences (Buying the stairway to Heaven) and how people started to question, and started reasoning (and it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune, then the Piper will lead us to reason) and the Age of Reason started where people started learning, and didn't just listen to authority (a new day will dawn for those who stand long). And the Lady was told that indulgences don't work, by saying that "Her stairway lied on the whispering wind" that is simply my take and could be VERY wrong |
