Ummmm yeah. New monkey is most definitely about drugs and addiction and his dealer who won't leave him alone.... he sings of the "millions of fans" but the melancholy attitude is obvious that he felt as though his addiction stopped him from being what everyone ELSE wanted him to be, or grow into, or become ( more famous, wealthy, happy, etc) This song was written the same year as Everybidys Dying, check out those lyrics and then post your comments. I seriously doubt than anyone could be in so much denial to ignore the facts that Elliot knew he could t balance his depression, addiction, responsibilities and be consistently motivated... Also, I'll bet a benji that all those that commented that this song has nothing to do with addiction or drugs is NOT an addict. For those of us that are, and struggle with the disease daily... there is absolutely no room for "maybe it's about this..." It's about Elliot's fatal love/ hate relationship with the substances that gave him courage, yet made him terrified at the same time- they made him creative at times and then he'd have complete writer's block and artistic apathy at other times. New Monkey is definitely a junkie's ballad. Take it from someone who shakes hands with their monkey every fucking day... as my disease tells me that I'm living in denial to ever think I can live up to the expectations of friends and family. It's always whispering in my ear.."just one more..." |

Charlie IS cocaine. Charlie is "holding a band... A rubber loop." =tourniquet used by IV drug users The only abuse in this song is DRUG ABUSE. Charlie won't shut up in his own mind. Won't let up because that's what cocaine does to the addict brain. Talks it into spending the mortgage money. The kids' tuition money. Cocaine addiction won't let him sleep. It's inning and manipulative. His subconscious is talking to him- you're on it all the time....full of shut ALL the time. |

@[pat1032312:16219] - the late, great and haunted genius of Elliot smith can seem "too deep" for some to grasp. most Elliot fans know he was an addict and he expressed his fears, resentments and routine of copping through his lyrics in many songs. The first time I heard this song I knew immediately that the "band in his hand" and the "rubber loop" describes a tourniquet that's used by many IV drug users. And there's no mistake who Charlie is: cocaine. Elliot's songs about the imprisonment of addiction comes from several voices. In this song, the voice is of someone who wants out of this scene. People are dying around him and it's almost like he knows he's stuck... |
