I think this is a very descriptive song, from the perspective of the partner and carer of the dying cancer patient that flows through the album. “Now I know that I can't make you stay” The partner can’t stop them dying “But where's your heart?” The patient isn’t scared of dying, probably trying to be strong, but isn’t being thoughtful to the mourning of the partner they’re leaving behind “And I know there's nothing I can say to change that part” No words can change the cancerous body part and stop the process of dying “So many bright lights that cast a shadow. But can I speak?” Everyone is focussed on the dying patient, nobody listens to the partner “Well, is it hard understanding I'm incomplete?A life that's so demanding, I get so weak. A love that's so demanding, I can't speak.” Caring for a dying partner is so incredibly demanding, and the carer has to put their life on hold and focus only on the patient. This can be a long process, meanwhile the carer essentially stops living, they put all their effort into the other. They love their partner, but didn’t want this, didn’t want to stop their life, and understandably some little piece of resentment creeps into their mind. “I am not afraid to keep on living. I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey, if you stay I'll be forgiven. Nothing you can say can stop me going home.” The patient will not get better, they will inevitably die. So once the patient dies, the partner will be able to get their life back again, start over, walk the world alone. They’ve accepted this and are not afraid. They just want the dying process to be over. “Can you see, my eyes are shining bright? 'Cause I'm out here on the other side of a jet black hotel mirror. And I'm so weak.” I read this as the partner is staying in a hotel near the hospital, and is crying. They can see themselves in a mirror and it’s so depressing, a picture of weakness. “Is it hard understanding I'm incomplete? A love that's so demanding, I get weak.” Loving someone who is slowly dying must be a phenomenally difficult experience. “These bright lights have always blinded me” The partner is always in the shadow of the dying patient. “I see you lying next to me. With words I thought I'd never speak” The partner never thought in their life that they would be looking at their sleeping partner, who they love so deeply, and have supported through such a tragic dying process, wondering and maybe wishing that their partner has finally died so they are both out of their misery. “Awake and unafraid, asleep or dead” Such a tragic song. It represents the emotions of a person deeply in love with a dying person, and all the commitment they give them while dying. But it’s extraordinarily difficult for that person, they thought they would have a wonderful and fulfilling life with their partner, not be spending months or years watching them die, and putting their life on hold and subverting a little piece of resentment for having to go through this. So tragic, and an amazing finale to such an amazing album. |

To my mind this is commenting about the atrocities of war and the attacks that the west are raging elsewhere in the world. The people in the houses are asleep in bed at night. They are attacked, open their eyes, turn on the lights, carry their dead ‘sleepers’ into the street, drop to their knees. The citizens of USA are led by government propaganda, believing the blue sky dream that they’re being sold by their ridiculous country. Which will eventually smother them. It’s difficult to differentiate Violet from Violent when Matt sings it. It’s a very sad song. |
