| @[oasisness:16032] My bad. Is there something specific that you were confused about? There are so many facets to this song, and so many historical, political, and social references that the singer's song about a failing relationship is projected upon. In that sense, there are many layers and levels of connection and reflection on human nature. This song first grabbed me simply because of its execution musically. Then I really wondered what the hell the lyrics were about since they are almost so seemingly random. It brought me to pages like this, to read other people's reactions and interpretations, and then I started to realize how many different things this song deals with, and weaves together. It is pretty brilliant. Sorry if I was confusing... I was doubly marveling while writing. I'm not sure if I made sense at all. Let me know if there's something specific though, or just that ALL of it's confusing. My bad! | |

The dialogue surrounding this song here confirms this song's enduring mystique. What the hell is going on. Well, you really have to listen to the grave tenor in his vocal delivery to really get the feeling that he is struggling to make sense of this desperately rocky relationship and the tensions of expectation that are naturally a product that threaten to feed each other's insecurity, and leave each of them cold in their own way. It is so sad and hopeless to be in such a catch-22, when the expectation of a relationship is to be in a 'neutral' and amicable space. But in reality, Zurich and its reputation of money laundering belies its natural and architectural beauty, as in the reference to the fountain, where this couple "sold" them (maybe their friends?) on their 'relationship' and "held them (Maybe their friends again?) hanging." Of course, Malkmus is being pretty hard on himself, but that also conveys the degree to which he cares and is invested, and hurts. In the 2nd verse, he talks about it being not his fault, but in the 3rd verse, admits that it can't really be hers either as they have both sold it, thus accepting that there is no one to blame. Even still, it's painful. I can't sing it strong enough (an expression of the depth of his feeling) That kind of strength I just don't have (an expression of frustration him not being able to sustain himself in this relationship) |

| @[herr_k:16021] really resonated w your 2nd paragraph statement. It can be felt in his delivery, that this is not easy, and that there are no easy answers | |
