I think we're all controlled, silently and often unknowingly, by those around us and their judgments. This song means, to me, that to those we really love, we desire an openness. But this is often hard because of the great gap between how we appear on the outside, defined and shaped by our fears to fit in, and who we really are. When we love someone, suddenly all that matters is that person - the rest of the "world" becomes irrelevant. This song explores the challenge of loving someone, but, at the same time, fearing that perhaps our true identity is hidden from them in the same way as it is from the majority of the people we meet. I also think there is a message that we should value above all else the power of the moment. Nothing lasts, and all we truly have is now. And if now brings love, if it "feels like the movies", then we must savour this. Because if we cannot learn to savour the moment, life slowly loses its meaning i think. |

Personally I think the temporary nature of relationships is conveyed by this song. He loves someone, but perhaps he is showing how we all love the idea of someone from a distance. In our mind, their presence grows and we feel like we love them indescribably. But, like so so many relationships, they are temporary, we move on, they are disposable and forgotten as quickly as the tide draws out again, and the wave of love that soaked us will all too fast retreat. However, despite the way we often know that the relationship won't last, we still have an ecstasy of love and joy, yet it is tainted with heartbreak and a fear that this love will pass all too fast. He seems to be able to accept this fact of life and love, shown by the upbeat, youthful and almost careless, 'not-looking-back', tone, which, to me, could be a way of him saying that this happens to everyone, and, like everyone, we have to move on, with only the memory of that exciting, youthful, romantic love we had for someone who we may never see again, or who may no longer feel the same as we do. Because life goes on and nothing lasts long enough... |

| So many relationships are more false than we may think. We are often "lost but never alone" in a relationship - we convince ourselves that it is what we want, but really, the relationship means less than we thought. In fact it is a series of 'white lies', told to make ourselves and our partner feel comforted and not alone. But it is not as real, as meaningful, as true as we thought. In the end, we know that it is not real, and it must end, even though with this we experience a great sadness and loss, which is really hard to deal with, even though it is probably right. So for me, this song is about a relationship built on a lie of false love. | |
