| Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics

all these characters save for The Piano Man (the narrator) all had dreams that they pushed aside whether they dreamed of making a difference in politics, going into acting for the movies or whatever. They ignored these dreams to fit into the role that society had set for them. They all look at the Piano Man and believe that he is also not living his dream as they see his talents but not their own. In reality, though everyone feels bad for the Piano Man but he is the only one fulfilled by his actions, he is bringing people together through his music and that means more to him than fame or fortune. Overall, beautiful song even if it might be overplayed at times and it's great to listen to on a rainy day. |

| Elton John – Crocodile Rock Lyrics

Whenever I hear this song It reminds me of dancing in my living room. It's about nostalgia, longing for the days of idealistic youth. The narrator lost touch with his friends after high school but whenever he hears the "crocodile rock" (the music of his youth) he is brought right back to those bitter-sweet memories. |

| Simon and Garfunkel – Richard Cory Lyrics

oh man this song! My mom didn't like us listening to it because of the suicide at the end but it's just so fascinating! The song is told through the perspective of a factory worker who looks at Richard Cory as the person with everything. He is revered in the town for his business and his involvement in charity. Then the narrator gives the gut-punch of his suicide. However, the narrator still would rather be dead than poor and I think that this song is showing that you never know whats going on inside a persons head, it's psychology. Depression is a very real diseases but it is often overlooked because you can't see it. You should never want to be someone else because we all have problems of our own and your idealization of someone never accounts for everything in their life. |

When I heard this song I was stunned. It is so blatantly about ghettos and the line about the rainbow, "and all of the colors are black" really hit me. The fact that children who grew up in a marginalized community have this jaded of an outlook really makes me want to do more in owing up to my privilege. Great song overall, I bet it was very controversial when it came out, |

| Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics

I have listened to this song all my life and not until I was 18 and took psychology did I get what this is about. Mrs. Robinson had some kind of a breakdown and is now in a psychiatric hospital. The song is told from the perspective of the doctor who is patronizing. The doctor speaks down to the patient and assures her that she will get better if she accepts religion. Also the line, "Laugh about it shout about it when you've got to choose, everyday you look at this you lose" describes the methods that doctors were using to "cure" the patients (Electroshock, Lobotomies), these methods caused the patient to lose a part of themselves and become vegetables so society didn't have to deal with them. Overall this is a fantastic song and a scathing look at the fact that we are not that far from our mistreatment and stigmatizing of the mentally ill as some of these attitudes still exist today. |

| Bo Burnham – Art Is Dead Lyrics

I love him first off, secondly It's always cool when people are critical of their own group when their group is privileged. He's saying that at some point when an artist becomes successful they become the epitome of everything their art stood against, it's really interesting. |
