My interpretation may be based in my personal experience, but I also feel that it's about an affair from the perspective of the other woman. Perhaps the man feels conflicted about seeing another woman. She can't stand to see him be conflicted, to see such a tender heart be deceitful, and she can't stand to be the reason for his deceit. So she makes the decision for him and ends the relationship, so that he can be the good man he wants to be and she can be a good woman, a woman who isn't enabling the man she loves to be a bad man. But she will always remember the love they shared, a rare and deep love.

@[lbs0980:19621] I agree with you. I think the interpretations of this song being about death are too literal. Sam Beam is a poet and he often writes about lost love. Therefore, I also think this song is an extended metaphor for a man who makes mistakes, perhaps an affair during the point where their love seemed to fade and he maybe even felt he was miserable in the relationship. But the mistake costs him the woman he loves, and though he tries to make amends, the relationship is already over for her. It's a stunning song. |

This is a beautiful song. I think that it so perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being completely enamored with someone such that you can't believe they are even from this planet.
I think the chorus says "Because you can open up the heavens for me," though. |
