First, This song can have infinite meanings depending on who is translating it. There are two different meanings that come to me right away, Quite simply Peter Pan is either a Person that changed her life or the Love she found for herself. Here is my explanation; There was a time when I was alone Nowhere to go and no place to call home My only friend was the man in the moon And even sometimes he would go away, too Basically there was a time when she was depressed or maybe even lost in life. The small things that made her happy (Man on the moon) were inconsistent or unreliable. Then one night, as I closed my eyes I saw a shadow flying high He came to me with the sweetest smile Told me he wanted to talk for awhile He said, "Peter Pan, that's what they call me I promise that you'll never be lonely," and ever since that day Peter Pan sounds like something or someone that brought happiness back into her life. This could be a lover, friend, or even herself. I am a lost boy from Neverland Usually hanging out with Peter Pan And when we're bored we play in the woods Always on the run from Captain Hook "Run, run, lost boy," they say to me Away from all of reality -Staying in theme with the previous interpretations; Escaping reality could simply mean day dreaming, or it also could mean escaping society and the pressure it puts on her. If Peter pan was a person, The activities that she described could be doing things with them that are outside the norm like reconnecting with nature, biking, picnicking, or just doing something that is fun to her. If Pan is something more internal, then she is doing things by herself and enjoying her own company away from everyone and they're influence/judgement. Neverland is home to lost boys like me And lost boys like me are free Neverland is home to lost boys like me And lost boys like me are free -Whatever is causing this new happiness, be it herself or a person, has free'd her from her prior sadness. "lost boy" also sounds like a reference to being an "outsider" or "different" but it also suggest satisfaction with this new way of life. He sprinkled me in pixie dust and told me to believe Believe in him and believe in me Together we will fly away in a cloud of green To your beautiful destiny As we soared above the town that never loved me I realized I finally had a family Soon enough we reached Neverland Peacefully my feet hit the sand And ever since that day -The key line in this verse is "... As we soared above the town that never loved me I realized I finally had a family" If Peter Pan is a person then this line means that that person finally made her feel accepted when no one else did. If Pan is herself then in means that she finally realized that loving herself was all she really needed. Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy Darling Even Captain Hook, you are my perfect story book Neverland, I love you so You are now my home sweet home Forever a lost boy at last -Every part of this new life she has found is just how it is supposed to be, the good and the bad. if it is a person she has accepted all of them, if it is her then she loves every part of herself even her flaws. |

| John Mellencamp – Jack and Diane Lyrics | 9 years ago |

First- I came across this song trying to figure out who Diane and jack were From Mkto's song American Dream The only reason why I'm commenting is because the first two interpretations were a bit misleading. Yes, music is translated in the eye of the beholder but there's a difference between translating and making something up...so here it goes; NOTHING in this song has any reference to pregnancy. It is simply about two kids who are young and fooling around. The chorus simply means that life continues after 16 and you have to grow up whether you like it or not. The bridge is saying have fun being a kid hence "rock and roll". "Let the bible belt come down" sounds like a reference to YOLO, basically have fun even though you know your gonna get in trouble because you'll only be this young and untouchable once. then the last line about "change making us men and women" is self explanatory and encourages the Young and reckless theme even more Overall the song is about being 16, reckless, and having fun. But take advantage of it because it wont last forever. |
