And to add to my previous comment, I've always thought the chorus says:

Why can we not be sober?

Instead of :

Why can't we not be sober

Again, doesn't make much sense the way its written here

@[cheesebagel:21557] I don't think I'd agree that most atheists are undecided, I'd say most atheist see religion for exactly what it is and once a person does, this knowledge in and of itself eliminates all doubt about the issue.

I think what you are referring to is agnosticism, and because there is some word available to denote specifically what you are describing, it is an error to conflate the two.

Its a bit like when you zzzare kid and find out there is is no Santa Claus wsy from that point on it is impossible to ever believe the myth again without going back on what you already know to be the truth.

I am pretty sure these lyrics are wrong on a couple of lines:

Jesus blows his fucking whistle /something that the past had done
Not : Jesus won't you fucking whistle7somethin but the past and done

Like an eternal whistle blower , calling us out for every last one of our fuck ups from 2000 years ago

What they have here doesn't even make sense, especially the second line, that doesn't even work grammatically

I'm pretty certain of that, and then this one I've always thought this but I'll concede that I could be wrong:

Murder now the pattern, must we/just because the son has come

Not: Murder now, the path called must wait

Again, this doesn't even make much sense. I know the lyrics aren't printed on the CD jacket, i checked out a couple of other sites and there are several in discrepancies between them, none of them have what I just said bit that doesn't mean I'm wrong as there doesn't seem to be a consensus to the contrary.

@[TokedDingo:20549] That is just...terrible. No one should be allowed to cover songs if they're going to bastardize the lyrics that way. Thats missing the point of the song, and would be offensive to Tom, its even offending me, im pretty sure if he's heard it he hates it, the man has spent a career that spans four decades making fun of religion and wondering what kind of god, if there was one, would be such a dick.

NOFX – Linoleum Lyrics 7 years ago
And why do several people think it is about a homrless guy sleeping on rolled up linoleum, haha. Wtf? I live in a city with somewhere between 5 and 10 thousand homeless people, they are literally all over the city, everywhere you go, and ive seen them do all sorts of crazy shit, some of it you wouldn't believe... But i have never seen a homeless person sleeping in rolled up linoleum, haha LMFAO. Do you guys even know what linoleum is, why on earth would the homeless have access to a fucking synthetic flooring textiles? Hahaha typically homeless people either sleep with blankets or if they don't have them maybe cardboard or some other thrown away material that is readily available. Rolled up linoleum, hahahaha, thats hilarious.

Its funny when people on this site attribute a much deeper meaning to song lyrics than what is probably intended, it happens especially with punk, because generally speaking, the lyrics of punk rock songs are usually rather direct and can almost always be taken at face value.

I know these are all very old comments so not really expecting a response from any of the people posted any of the comments here... however if any of them were to respond I would hope that their response might make a little bit more sense than their original comments did. For most of these, a single combination mbkwonly two words come to mind:

a) Uhhhhh.... b)..... What?

@[deez115524:17341] I didnt assume anything, you used something from the real word justify your interpretation of the lyric by saying "you know cuz atheist are paranoid about god in the sky". See what im saying, you are stating what you thought was true about something other than the song to justify what you believe to be true about the song lyric. So by responding i am responding simultaneously to your misinterpretation of the real world , and also the song lyric, since that is what you said the line meant. But moreover, as i suggested last time: you seem to think the singer is talking about himself, as that is why you brought up atheism to begin with , you said that he was an atheist so the line must be a reference to how atheist are paranoid about god in the sky. But the line says "the third planet is sure that its being watched..." so as i said, he is likely talking about the population of the third planet, if he meant himself (the atheist) he probably would have said something else, like... "I or " me" or "issac" or "an atheist" except he would have never said the last one because he would have known it wouldn't make any sense at all :)

im really not sure how you haven't realized that yourself by now, but im fairly sure you have, and that you are just arguing for the hell of it, as I am. After all, why the fuck should i even care, right?

Besides, someone even came along and "liked" my comment shorty afterwards , they probably thought it was a funny thing that you said like I did, so there is even another person telling you this, they are just being a lot more subtle about it than I am. And would it really be the end of the world if you were wrong about something so meaningless? Of course not. Was is funny? Yeah man, a little, but not so funny that it makes any sense arguing about over the last month or so like the two of us have been, lol, for which i am at least as much at fault for as you are, unless you want to argue about that too. :)

@[deez115524:17141] Let me say this again.... I didn't comment on the song, i commented on your statement that "atheists are paranoid about god in the sky" .

See you made that general comment that made absolutely no logical sense. You didn't originally say "the song is about a contradiction.." or anything like that. You said that atheists are paranoid about being watched by god in the sky. And i laughed and said that statement is hilariously misguided, because it is. Its like saying "people that dont believe in bigfoot are paranoid about bigfoot". Do you see how rediculous that is? Thats all I was doing, pointing out that you sounded confused about what an atheist is when you said that. Thats all.

In fact, i happen to agree with your interpretation of the lyrics, there is no question in my mind that he is referring to god with that line, but he isnt saying that as an atheist, he is paranoid about it, he says "the third planet" is paranoid about it, as in: the world's population, in general, believes in this eye in the sky.

So theres no point to begin with in debating the singer beliefs, he didnt even comment about his own beliefs. If you ask me, clearly the dude is an atheist, based on some of his other lyrics, so you really are preaching to the choir here.... but when you said that he has said he is still paranoid about god watching him, i explained that if that is true he really isnt much of an atheist, he must be agnostic. But i only said that in response to that specific thing you said, because i thought you were still confused about what atheist (dont) believe, based on how illogical your first statement was.

And besides, the original line i was laughing at said "atheists are paranoid about god", something like that, which is absurd. Even if you want to argue that there could be an atheist out there that is paranoid about god, which i still think is a logical paradox, the original statement suggests that all or most atheists are paranoid about God, and that is of course an obvious contradiction, it shows that the person saying it has misunderstood the very definition of the word. As a lifelong atheist i can assure you that only people who believe in God have any reason to be paranoid about him/her/it/whatever, but that should be logically obvious.

@[deez115524:17056] Not exactly, an atheist knows that factually there is nothing to suggest that there is any diety, or heaven, or angels, etc, or that one religion is true but all others are myths, or that (insert any/all other religious beliefs here).
An agnostic is essentially an atheist but he has not trancended/overcome his religious upbringing, so he worries that he is doing something wrong, he feels guilty about knowing what he knows. Its not that he doesn't know he is right, its that he doesn't have balls - he probably wasn't very strong in his religious faith either, for that matter, but what I'm saying is that he is weak minded, "spineless" might be another word for it. He doesn't believe, or disbelieve, with conviction.
And no, what you just said doesn't make any logical sense at all. One cannot be afraid of something he KNOWS doesn't exist, and that's my point. One can be afraid of something he isn't sure about, like our agnostic friend Issac, apparently, but if one knows something doesn't exist, there is no reason to be afraid of it. I don't see how you can argue otherwise, but by all means, enlighten me :)

@[deez115524:17014] If that's true then he's not really much of an atheist, is he? Lol, those kinds of people usually call themselves "agnostic" because they fear that if they are wrong and there really is a God he may get mad at them :)

And atheists don't view God as "an eye in the sky that they're paranoid about" hahaha

They don't view God as anything, they don't believe there is a God, so they certainly don't think he is in the sky and they have no reason to be paranoid. Sorry, thats just a hilariously misguided assumption.

I came across this the other day and something has been bugging me ever since... I dont remember if the lyrics were printed on the album sleeve or whatever it's called now, but I think if not there may be an error here. The line "... And your hands and knees felt cold and wet in the grass TO ME" , I always heard it another way, and as it is written here it doesn't even make sense really. I always thought he said "cold and wet in the grass BENEATH", which does make sense, in addition I the fact that it sounds more like "beneath" to me.

Maybe I'm wrong but I can't really picture it the way it is here, like he is touching/feeling someone's hands and... knees? Kind of akward.

But the way I've been hearing it (for the last decade or something) , he is referring to how someone's hands and knees felt TO THEM while on their hands and knees in the cold, wet grass. You can at least picture that. But I don't really know for sure what I'm talking about, just another opinion...

BTW I know people interpret all caps online as yelling but im on my phone so I don't have a way to put in italics or embolden or underline the world's.

Also i like the person's interpretation about a terminated or miscarried pregnancy, I definitely never thought of it like that. I actually thought it was a religious reference, probably due to the eye. "eye In the sky" and "promised land" remarks. But anyway I think that yours is one of the better ones (on the first page, i wish I had time to spend just discussing modest mouse)
