This song is, as far as i can tell, an attempt to understand a divorce between a former couple's child who is upset, confused, and lonely in the immediate aftermath of the unfortunate split of said-child's parents. this is the child's attempt to understand divorce, which is extremely painful and alien to small children who generally assume that their parents are enigmatic beings who will always be together and always love one another because that is all the child has ever known of the relationship between their parents. the idea of parents divorcing is terrifying to young children. this song is tragically beautiful. it's heartbreaking, and as a man who has been divorced and single for 6 years now, i get it. me and my ex wife didn't have kids but i can empathatically imagine the painful colatteral damage and fallout that the child must face confusingly in such a situation. most small children view their parents and the relationship between their parents along with their family unit as being something safe that was there before the child was born and will last long after the child has passed away. unfortunately, this is not the case in this song and in a lot of relationships gone wrong. I think this song is how a young child (think aged 6 to maybe 10 years old) views a divorce and describes an unsucessful understanding and comprehension of the reality of a heartbreaking split between their parents. This is one of my favoite songs of all time. definitely in my top ten and it is my absolute favorite track that Imogen ever put out there. she seems to be a rather remarkable woman who understands the human condition. Imogen Heap deserves all the credit she gets, and more. a truly multifaceted musician, unbounded by genre. thanks for reading! |
