@[lycanthropian:52825] To be strictly correct. Charles V sent troops from France and mercenaries from Germany to capture the Pope. The day before the attack the German leader had a stroke and had to return home, leaving the mercenaries in the French leader's control (without enough currency to pay their wages). Rome was well protected, albeit with only 5000 militiamen. The French leader wore a regalia of white to seperate himself from his men, so they knew who was giving them orders. However, this also singled him out to the defenders who took advantage and mortally wounded him. Left without a leader, the attacking force was under no controls and literally decimated the population of Rome from 50,000 to about 20,000. Witnesses literally said the streets ran with blood there was so much killing. But the Swiss Guard did distinguish themselves in their sacrifice to save the Pope. Their sacrifice is celebrated every May 6th, as the new recruits to the Swiss Guard are accepted into the force. |

@[tsouth1212:24888] I think the video for this song back you up as there is a lot of military imagery. It starts out with what seems like two brothers doing brother things (riding bikes, teasing one another, camping in the back yard) while on televisions show that a war is going on. Then the younger brother opens a box and pulls out pictures of himself and an older man and some medals. Then the previous scenes change and the older brother is now this man (I get the impression that the older man is the boy's father and the earlier scenes were showing that the father-son relationship more of a friendship than parent-child). And then the boy is in a military graveyard and they are burying the man with military honors. And the son is being presented the flag that draped his father's casket. |

I think this song is about how we idolize the spirit of adventure. Each singer takes on the identity of a person living on the edge and being fulfilled, but still they die in this pursuit. And the spirit is reborn to continue to inspire humankind to move forward. |

I always thought of this song on parallel themes. The first being the whole reincarnation theme of this single entity that keeps coming back over and over to continue its journey towards eternity. The second theme being the archetypes each verse is centered on. The Highwayman, Sailor, Dam Builder, and Starship Pilot are all indelibly etched into the human psyche as persons who risked much and sometimes lost, but ultimately they moved the world forward.
The Starship Pilot's verse is looking towards the future where after he crosses the Universe divide he will have done everything and can now rest, but he realizes that there will always be new challenges and he will have to step up again and change the world again even if it is only as a single drop of rain (which while not great in and of itself, can surely help to wear down a great mountain). |
