| Ariana Grande – Breathin Lyrics
|
One of the hardest battles an individual can face in life, is the battle with oneself. Grande discusses this in 'Breathin', pointing out the most difficult of mental illnesses-anxiety.
As someone who suffers with severe anxiety, and other mental health problems, I get what Ariana was aiming for here. In the wake of the tragic Manchester Arena attacks in 2017, not to mention her personal life regarding her romances, she tells a story of wanting to take a moment and pause.
'Breathin' is about collecting yourself, understanding that you can find stable ground when the world is falling apart. Realising that you can go back to happier place and reflect on that, and to finally understand that there are certain things in this world that we cannot control, so we have to let go and continue on with the life we have. |

| Linkin Park – Leave Out All the Rest Lyrics

I find it outstanding how certain music transcends time. When I heard about Chester's death, and how it was suicide, I immediately thought of this song. I was 14 when I stumbled upon it, and it just stuck with me for so long. Having depression, I believe this song is about how when a human beings life is coming to an end, that people should not remember the bad that they have done, to forgive the mistakes that they have made, and to remember the good that they have done. 'Leave Out All The Rest' demonstrates how fragile human beings really are, how they may appear to have it all sorted, yet they struggle with their own personal battles. I often picture him singing this to someone special to him, as it is so raw and heartbreaking. RIP Chester, you really were a talented man. |

| Carina Round – Backseat Lyrics

This particular track holds such a strong nostalgic feel to it. I remember coming across this at 4am in the morning, and thinking about all the long lost loves of my life, reminding me of a time when I was more hopeful, young and less cynical.
I personally believe that Carina Round is underrated, like many of the singers in this genre. But the song is so personal, it really does strike a note with those who listen to it. |

| Miley Cyrus – Malibu Lyrics

I am surprised that there aren't that many more comments on this song, considering this debut Miley's new image and optimistic, refreshing approach towards life.
This song has a more meaningful message, embedded in the 'sugary, feel-good' beat of the overall song. Its about second chances, losing oneself, before being able to mend the broken pieces all over again. It is quite a personal track to Miley and many who are in a similar position, telling its listeners a story of personal growth, youth and playfulness.
Besides, I love this song, it reminds me of when I went to the beach for the first time. |

| Miley Cyrus – She's Not Him Lyrics

|
Perhaps one of the most poignant songs of her album, something I did not expect from Miley Cyrus. Many have cited this as a 'pansexual milestone', discussing loving one gender, being in love with another.
To me, this song's message is simple. It is about struggling with your emotions, balancing them with your sexual identity. On many levels, this is relatable to many individuals amongst this generation. I personally believe that this is an apology towards one of Miley's alleged ex's (Stella Maxwell?...), for not being able to give your entire self to another, because you still want to be with another person, and even though you are physically attracted, that in itself, is not enough to justify being with someone. |

| Lana Del Rey – Ride Lyrics

|
the song is about freedom, of emotions and the mind. The lyrics are quite broad to distinguish its true meaning, leaving it open for interpretation, but the general idea of it is trying to escape the life you have, just trying to ride through it all. The song deals with the problem of wanting to be with someone and no one at the same time, the idea that emotional security is a joke but still wanting to crave it. Belonging to someone is transient, lasting only for a while. |

| Train – Drops of Jupiter Lyrics

On the face of it all, this song is about death, and how the soul finally is released back in to the atmosphere. He wrote this about the death of his mother, and how she finally escaped the mundane tasks that ruled her life.
In my view however, when I first listened to this is, its about loving someone so much that when they finally return in your life, you can't help but still love them for who they are. The type of individual that Pat describes in the song is someone who likes to travel, taste new flavours of life. For me the song has a lot of significance as Jupiter is the ruling planet of Sagittarius and the man I can relate this song to is one (just a personal side note haha).
Often many people look for something better, and then realise what they left is what they needed and so desired.
Thats what I think this song is about. |

| Cyndi Lauper – True Colors Lyrics

I remember when I heard this song for the first time, and instantly thought about loving someone completely that you can see past their faults and recognising that despite the whole worlds perception of that individual, you view them as a person who is a broken, insecure and still love them.
Lauper really projects a lot of emotion in to this song, which speaks to me on a personal level.
Eva Cassidy also did this justice too, both version equally as beautiful. |

| Jess Glynne – Don't Be So Hard On Yourself Lyrics

|
This song was written by Glynne, when she was as she described "the darkest place" in her life. The song is about learning to have a little faith, and a lot of self love. The singer is explaining that she had a lot of negativity following her wherever she went, and often was too harsh on herself, being self critical, but finally had enough and broke free from that cycle of thought. The song is incredibly empowering, and uplifting, telling its listeners to open their hearts a little more and not to bring themselves down whenever life crashes in to a halt. |

| Jess Glynne – Take Me Home Lyrics

|
Like the other commenter, this song is majorly about overcoming adversity, and top of it all, being with someone who can help this individual think rationally rather than overthink their situation. Take Me Home translates to breaking free and finally finding yourself and returning to a warmer and better place, not just physically but mentally and emotionally too. Glynne herself explained on another track in her album "Don't Be Too Hard On Yourself" that she was in a dark place when that was written and this song is probably another page from her story, to make it somewhere and someplace. |

| The Beatles – Let It Be Lyrics

|
Let It Be was written after Paul had a dream about his late mother, during a particularly stressful time in his life, telling him that it would be ok, that there will be a way out of this predicament soon, which later inspired Paul to write this song.
I for one, look at it from a religious perspective, as it resonates with my own life. There are certain situations that I cannot handle, and I remember having an emotional breakdown, bordering on a mental one, when this song played in the supermarket. A coincidence? Maybe, but it helped.
Ultimately, it is a song that tells its listeners to just leave the problems to the universe or higher being, that things will eventually fall in to place, and you shouldn't give up just yet on your dreams. |

| Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
I only started to listen to Elliot Smiths songs this year, never really touching upon any of his work before. The song Twilight is incredibly beautiful and tells a story about a man working on his addiction, and despite acknowledging another humans presence and love for him, his addiction overrides that and that causes him great pain.
If we analyse it in a different way, to me at times, shows a man that is emotionally unstable and unavailable to even accept the love this person is giving him. He knows that they can make him laugh and is good for him, but ultimately knows his emotions aren't in the right place to love them back. It is like an apology he is giving to them about being the way he is. The songs title 'Twilight', can signify that he almost saw a way out of this emotional spiral, but couldn't just do it.
He already belongs elsewhere. |

| The Staves – Mexico Lyrics

I first got in to The Staves earlier this year, having a soft spot for folk-love songs. This interprets to me, the anguish and pain one individual has for another person, and despite having hurt them in the past before, they still love them.
It is a reflective song, one that sets the scene of wanting to run away, avoid problems but inevitably wanting to also be with them, tell them their confusion and fears concerning their views on love.
They want this person, to make reality of the dreams they had, as it would make them incredibly happy, but they are scared they will hurt them again like they will again so they are apprehensive. |

| The Darkness – Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time Lyrics
| 9 years ago

I find this song difficult to listen too, as it brings back such messed up and broken memories. But other than that, it is a lovely song. A break up song about a man reminiscing about what he had with this woman, and trying to explain to her that whatever mistake he had done that resulted them breaking up in the first place 'seemed like a good idea at the time', if we interpret it in a different way, it signifies that the relationship wasn't able to be revived anyway, as she had lost interest and perhaps they didn't last in the long run, but for the short amount of time that they were together, they actually enjoyed each others company. |

| The Darkness – Knockers Lyrics

|
The song is about the singer being involved with a woman that wasn't at first instance attractive, but when he bumps in to her again, he is wanting to make it work again. Ultimately, this is a sexual song, about the singer wanting to sleep with her, and focusses on her assets but comments about how she has amazing 'hair'. |

| The Darkness – Forbidden Love Lyrics

|
This is a typical catchy love song about two individuals that for whatever reason, are apart and the singer is wanting to break every rule in the book to be with the person. On a personal level, this song speaks to me, as it can demonstrate the anguish that one person can have when in love with another, the love is forbidden, difficult to both touch and understand, but it doesn't stop, often playing up the cliche saying 'love conquers all'. A lovely, and uplifting song. |

| The Darkness – Living Each Day Blind Lyrics

|
Living Each Day Blind to me translates in to slight love song, if we read between the lines. It seems to me that this person, is in love with someone and wants them to escape this 'dead end town'. There is nothing else left for them and they seem to be struggling, which can also signify that these two are having problems in their relationship, they are taking each day as it comes and don't really know why they are. It is a song about breaking free from problems that have really hurt this individual, if we look at Hawkins personal life, we can also tell that he has had these kind of struggles and has broken free from them. |

| The Darkness – Holding My Own Lyrics
|
When I went to my first Darkness concert, the guy I went with told me that this song is about masturbation which made a hell of a lot of sense.
But of course, the structure of the song makes it seem very romantic, and if we interpret it in that way, it could mean that one person has finally got his or her freedom from another person, and that they are finally putting their own needs and desires first. |

| The Darkness – Love Is Only A Feeling Lyrics
| 9 years ago
|
|
My favourite song of existence. It quite simply interprets (to me), that love is a very beautiful yet risky emotion that one could feel at any time. Hawkins implies at various times in the song that when one is with another person, they believe in the idea that love is real, and though they aren't sure if it is, it can make the person feel almost invincible, and capable of doing the impossible with that person beside them. Inevitably, love is just an emotion that is fleeting and can cause massive heartache whenever the feeling isn't as euphoric as it once was, however, Hawkins suggests throughout the song that this feeling isn't really one to give up on, considering it makes you feel so good about yourself. |
