Alright, so when I first heard it I thought this song was about internalized homophobia/heteronormativity. The speaker has a boyfriend but finds herself attracted to a girl. At first she tries to excuse it, saying that it was just because she was similar to the speaker's boyfriend. The girl wants more than friendship from the speaker and that relationship falls apart. Except that sort of stops making sense after the first verse and chorus. So my revised idea is the speaker has fallen in love with a friend, but is at first stopped by the fact that the speaker is already dating someone. When that relationship ends and they finally do get to be something more, the speaker's prospective lover cheats on her/otherwise separates from her. |
