I see this as a bit of a love triangle because there are clearly three characters in the song (he, she, and me.) It sounds to me like an onlooking guy (one who has feelings for the girl or is an ex ("The one you want, or the one you've lost.") is watching her throw herself at this other guy. He no longer is receiving this girl's affection ("Where has your love gone?") Now he's "short some," and she's not interested. But he "knows her game," she tries to play hard to get ("No chance you'll get nothing from me"), but now that "everybody's there," (all these other girls) she wants to be with this guy. As the ex boyfriend watches on, it seems like he finds it humorous that "she thinks she's the one" and is acting naive but there are a bunch of other girls that feel the same away about her new guy. In a way, the narrator and the girl have a lot in common, because they're both chasing after people they can't have. ("That's why you're after her, and she's after him.") |

I definitely have it flipped then other people on here. I see it as the narrator seeing (technically the song is gender neutral) an ex girlfriend, crush, or even old friend. The chorus reminds me of when you bump into someone in public that you haven't seen in a while. The guy in the song clearly still has feelings for the girl, romantic or not, but he indicates a certain amount of bitterness, "Take me to where you are, what you've become." He suggests that she has changed. She is acting like nothing is different between the two of them, but once she leaves, she'll go back to her new life. The term "Next Year" seems to represent the constant postponing of them really talking. Perhaps their current arrangement is better, and if she comes back, they will no longer be close because they'll realize they just aren't that compatible. |
