| Noah and the Whale – Mary Lyrics | 9 years ago |

I've always thought that this was about a guy who was too self-obsessed to realise that he was with a girl who was totally in love with him. "When I last saw Mary, she lied and said it was her birthday" to me shows this pretty well. He runs into her a while after they split up and it's her birthday. He assumes she's lying because he's convinced that he'd remember something like that, when in reality he's too wrapped up in himself and has forgotten. Charlie thinks he's in a very false relationship because he can only see it from his point of view, while Mary can totally see through him. When she says "Shut your mouth you don't know what you're talking about", she's telling him not to speak on her behalf, because he's so egocentric he couldn't possibly understand what she's feeling. I feel very sorry for Mary to be honest. |
