Chuck Ragan – The Boat Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is supposed to be our boat. The boat in the song is characterized as a song ("eyes close tight ears open for the boat") that relieve us from the stormy waters that our life can sometimes be. For someone like Ragan, music is an outlet that can be turned to no matter the circumstance. It is within music, within songs, that we can find solstice from the crazy shipwreck that life is.
Also the song is about finding that boat, and the song is called The Boat. I find that the song The Boat is currently my boat. Chuck did it again, genius.

Bear's Den – Elysium Lyrics 7 years ago
Every part of this song is heart-breaking and beautiful. I think the entire meaning of this song can be taken from the song itself: "Just hope that age does not erase all that you've seen."
This song is an older brother talking to his younger brother and pleading him to never grow up. 'Adulthood' is sometimes best characterized by feeling stuck in everyday, mundane routines that consume your life and your mind. Your passions fade and your hope diminishes.
In childhood, we are filled with hope for the future because we're naive. I think this naiveness though is where the beauty of innocence and youth comes from and people so easily lose it because of the efforts of growing up.
As long as we retain our childish hopes and dreams, all else will be fine.
It also seems that the speaker in this song is somewhere in the inbetween - as if he was growing up and fine and they it hit him that he lost his hope and looks back to his little brother and warns him, begs him, pleads him to never lose hope. When you lose hope, you lose who you truly are.
This song is about the beauty of youth. Reminds me of Le Petit Prince.
Brilliant.

The Weakerthans – Sounds Familiar Lyrics 7 years ago
As a student who's about to enter college, I find this song to be incredibly sentimental and I do hold it near and dear to my heart. I tend to interpret this song in it's simplest form - the tumultuous time it can sometimes be to maintain your youth, your innocence. I use the lyrics: "We must never stop watching the sky with our hands in our pockets; stop peering in windows when we know doors are shut; stop yelling small stories and bad jokes and sorrows. And my voice will scratch to yell many more," as a sort of list of the commandments of maintaining. I also think this would have been beautiful in the new release of "The Little Prince," in the soundtrack. Also the song that made me fall in love with The Weakerthans.

Brand New – Brother's Song Lyrics 7 years ago
This song is truly brilliant. It captures the loss of youth that war can sometimes characterize. The beginning of the song depicts a very youthful image, with mentions of silly parties and young love. This song is written in the perspective of a brother, presumably older, who may have already lost his vision of youth, and it was his younger brother who reminded him of the beauty of youth. However, he has to face the loss of youth, the loss of innocence, once again but this time it's vicariously. This song is a heart-wrenching tale of a brother who's willing to fight against all odd's to preserve his brother's innocence, his brother's youth.

Hot Water Music – Drag My Body Lyrics 7 years ago
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I think that the whole concept of 'hardly feeling human anymore' is applicable to nearly all situations; maybe you're confronting a belief or you've lost someone extremely close to you. The middle of the song shows the true struggle that is coping, or dealing, with the tragedy: "Gnashing my teeth and speaking in tongues; Still shaking something mental at a loss for the words I'd once known." To me, these lyrics remind me of an exorcist of some sort; someone trying to deal with a tragic change of some sort. As the song comes to an end, the motto is to "stand and hold steady now," meaning once you've been able to find that tiny glimpse of human-ness within yourself, you must hold on to it as tightly as possible and (metaphorically) hold yourself up right and remain steady. Absolutely brilliant.
