Adding to the thought from the top comments, I think it's also about narcissism. (Also because I hope that with the next album Arcade Fire is finally moving away from the "evil technology/lost innocence" theme.) 1) The reason people are attracted by the "reflectors" is because they support their ego: you see yourself in them. 2) And when you become a reflector, you are seen - but at the cost of losing your personality. 3) When you're the only one not participating, the "signals we send are deflected again" - you get nothing in return, so what's the point? That way, Win and Regine, the protagonists/heroes of the video, end up "alone on a stage". The audience isn't there because they're hiding behind reflectors. Examples: - You think you're "so connected" with Facebook, but it's an echo chamber of your opinions. - You think you're discovering/making great new music, but the "little silver discs" are also (literally & figuratively) reflective, as everything's an imitation of something else. - You discovery some new ideal but it only serves to please your own ego, they're not the resurrector" that will change your life. |
