Kate Rusby – I Am Stretched On Your Grave Lyrics 4 years ago
I think there’s more to it than someone in mourning who cant let go of their deceased lover and this is hinted at in the phrase “ the priests and the friars hold me in dread. As well as the phrase “thanks be to Jesus we did what was right” and reference to her maidenhead. If it were a simple case of someone in mourning who can’t let go the priests would be consolidative and supportive but the phrase suggests they are otherwise. Something not right here with the church

Portishead – Small Lyrics 4 years ago
A lot of replies suggest this song being about relationships, and in particular about same sex or bisexuality and Beth certainly writes a lot of lyrics about relationships but a few other themes in her lyrics are religion(Wandering Star) and politics(Cowboys) and in particular people selling themselves to an ideology. I think Her intention in this song is revealed in the music which starts out with a soft acoustic guitar suggesting an awakening. Then You get those various buzzing sounds that are unsettlingly suggestive of a transformation into something twisted and demented and then the middle keyboard section which is what I would imagine if You asked a keyboardist to come up with something evil. The keyboard section is basically a march. All of a sudden “tasting a wine”, “opening a doorway to see through the light”, and “a wisdom that took me away from the bed” can have a different meaning- perhaps being seduced into a weird mixture of religion and politics be it Fundamentalist Christianity, The Taliban, ISIS?? Remember this song came out in 2008, all of those things were existent in the world. For me it’s the “Hating the Lord” line being sung in a voice so innocent and frail. As if “trust in the Lord”. After all Donald Trump who personifies the 7 deadly sins did attend a Fundementalist Rally. Was He becoming the President for Christians or was He just after their votes??? And what about those who saw through Him and see him as a very dangerous and evil man??Are they perhaps the ones who are “Hating the Lord?” “Who you were then and who you are now” another interesting line. And of course the last words spoken in the song are “Hating the Lord” followed by a searing guitar solo pedals and all like a final reckoning and final truth. To me this song is highly suggestive of the grounds for separating church and state
