Fugees – Killing Me Softly Lyrics 4 years ago
@[BigJerty:36554] Of course we all know the backstory of the song and how it was written about Don McClean, blah blah blah. But I agree, how about we think a little more deeply!!!

@[JPHendrix:36553] I love this take!!! I never thought about it that way but that really makes a lot of sense. The lyrics are so beautifully vague which allows the listener to interpret the lyrics beneath the surface. Great insight!

I love this song so much, it's gotta be one of my favorites and the Fugees version gives it a completely different meaning than the original. First of all, they leave out the third verse of the original recording and secondly, they add this bit at the end,

"Everybody got a breakin' point kid
And they'll rat on you
The family niggas will rat on you
That's why we gotta be prepared to take whoever out we need to"

which to me, gives all the lyrics sung beforehand a completely new meaning. The song is really about "snitches" and the betrayal of someone who you thought you could trust. Instead of picturing a young girl being awestruck by the performance of a male guitar player(Don McClean), I picture a courtroom where someone who was close to Ms. Hill ("family niggas") is telling her sins to a judge, or quite literally reading her letters aloud. Given the time period and the culture of hip-hop in the mid 1990s (over twenty years after Roberta Flack released her version of the song), it seems to make much more sense that the tune is making a statement about loyalty and betrayal. I don't think Lauryn Hill was crying to Don McClean when she was younger and neither were the people who listen to the Fugees. Ms. Hill brought the tune to a newer and younger audience and the last few lines are the most crucial to the interpretation of this particular version of the classic "Killing Me Softly"
