| A beautiful, sad, hopeful song. Best song on a very good album. | |

Clearly the start of the song is about someone finding someone else and breaking up the releationship leaving the singer alone with the painful feelings, wishing for some physical pain to shift the focus away from the fact the relationship is over. The section starting with "This is all you've ever known..." I'm confused about the meaning of, however. Who is the wee man? The man abandoned by the woman? Humans? Penis? I think it is about her telling him it is over, and him not able to see the relationship from her point of view, but I'm not sure. The final part where he screams out the question of what happens after we die I interpret as him considering suicide as a way to end the emotional pain of the relationship ending. |

This song to me is about how the people you grow up with shape who you are, and the struggle of choosing a different path than your childhood friends. Growing up in a "bad neighborhood" the other kids you grow up with see you as part of their group, because you coming from the same neighborhood are unwanted like them. And the ambivalence of loving these people for always being around you, while at the same time knowing their darker sides or their twisted view on things also influence you. I'm not sure about the "woman" in song, but I interpret it as "the future/career/growing up/new people outside the old neighborhood". I interpret it as Simon was told things about this "woman" when growing up, which didn't really hold truth. |
